Help! My DVD drive sometimes stops working!

Well my DvD drive just stopped working (it no longer appeared in My Computer) when I was installing a game. First, this has happened before, and to remedy it, I take out the IDE cable from the CDRW and restart the computer.

Anyone know what could be causing it? The drive works most of the time, so I don't think its drivers.

try new ide cable.does it even see it in bios?

The IDE cable is fairly new, and yes it's in the BIOS.. it just did it again... more help please!

It does it on the forth CD of WoW install.

(Its not the CDs I don't think, I reformated and needed to reinstall it, but it worked before)

how's that no help. dont be hard hardheaded, things like this happen all the time. answer the question.

try a couple more IDE cables... it may be new but sometimes, new stuff do come broken

also try using it in another computer if you can

Did you check to see if it is still in DMA mode? Sometimes, and I don't know why, mine will reset itself to PIO and it will bumble-up my optical drives.

Right Click 'My Computer' > Select 'Properties' > Click 'Hardware' > Click 'Device Manager' > Epand 'IDE ATA/ATAPI Controllers' > Double click 'Primary IDE Channel' > Click 'Advanced Settings' > Make sure under 'Transfer Mode' that it says "DMA if available" > Do the same for the 'Secondary IDE Channel'.
