Help my ailing CRT

Hello,

I have a Compaq P1220 Diamondtron CRT. Lately the geometry has been ridiculous. For example, running in 1600x1200, I have my horizontal width set to zero yet I cannot see the far-right of my screen (clock etc.). Furthermore, I can see multicolored lines of what I imagine to be phosphorous on the right and left side. The lines had been appearing only while watching DVDs, but as I type this they are present on the right side of my screen.

I've heard of people opening their CRTs and tinkering with the innards, but I'm clueless. Any help is greatly appreciated.

If you were in linux, I'd tell you to mess with your modeline, but since it seems you're in windows you can try to just use your nvidia/ati control panel to move your screen around virtually..

Since tinkering inside can kill you, I would use it as an excuse to buy an awesome new screen.

I know there are some geometry adjustments you can do inside, but multicolored lines and such are a sign of a dying tube.

Ya', I wouldn't suggest opening up, and messing around inside of your monitor, unless you really... and I mean REALLY know what you're doing. A capacitor still holding a charge could easily stop your heart, if you're shocked by it.

I don't know how old your monitor is, but it might be more trouble then it's worth, and you'd be better off looking into getting a new monitor, or finding a used one for less money.

Thanks for the responses. I was able to correct the positioning with CCC.

So, nothing I can do to correct the lines? I was hoping to keep this monitor until the summer.

just sounds like a dying tube man, not much else to tell ya....
i wouldnt waste my time with it, i'd look into another monitor :)

Yeah, but I'm a poor college kid. This monitor is quality besides what's been happening lately. I mean, it's big with great refresh and whatnot. I planned on upgrading in 4-5 months.

Where are the CRT magicians?

theres no magical fix. people dont even work on crts anymore around here locally (and probably most places), and as stated previously, working on it yourself is an easy way to die. Start saving some money for a new monitor.
