Help merging a 2 partitions

Ok, I tried Norton Partition Magic 8, Power Quest Partition Magic 7 and I get the same error with both programs. When Windows XP Pro reboots it says Error 27: Cannot lock drive. I know in Windows 98 you can type the Lock C: or unlock C: to lock and unlock a drive, but that doesn't seem to work in XP.

Any suggestions?

Or anyone know another way to merge 2 partitions?

messing with partitions isn't a very good idea - can you make it work? sure, but it's usually a big pain in the ass

if it's at all possible, I'd recommend you leave them separate or just backup everything and format/make a new partition

actually you should backup everything before screwing around with them anyway, just incase something happens
 
I've used Partition Magic numerous times over the years and never had a problem at all. I've resized partitions, merged partitions...etc. and never had an ounce of problems doing it and never lost any data either. :)
 
I haven't used Partition Magic so I wasn't speaking from personal experience, rather something I rememberered from this guide

While applications like Partition Magic allow you to resize and create new partitions on used hard drives, without destroying data, it's better to do it right the first time. There have been reported cases of people losing precious data when they tried to resize partitions with Partition Magic. Admittedly, this represents only a small percentage of users.

If you must use Partition Magic to re-size a drive you're currently using, make sure you first back-up everything. This seems like common sense, but you'd be surprised to learn how few people actually do. I have used PM many times myself and never had a problem.

Also, when using Partition Magic, only perform one operation at a time. PM allows you to que multiple options/tasks, but the more things you try to get it to do in concert, the greater your chances for problems. It will take longer to do each operation individually, but you'll have less chance of screwing something up.

Either way, it's still a good idea to back everything up even if you aren't doing anything: drives fail, data gets corrupted, etc.

Add another vote for copying everything off to another machine or backup device, creating the one large partition, then moving data back.
