Hey Peeps. i have just built a new pc all is running well up untill a around a week ago
now its started crashing at diffrent times. sometomes stable for a day or 2 sometimes constant reboots

the Rig
gigabyte ga-ma770-ds3
phenom 9600 black
crucial ballistix tracer 8500 single sided 2x1gb
8800gts

sometimes memtest passes ok without any error. sometimes it fails. so i really think its the ram now. last time i had bad ram it would fail memtest all the time.
the only other thing it could be is the northbridge seems to run very hot. but when memtest fails its at the same memory points so i think this would rule out overheating ?.

So peeps im 99% sure its the ram and think i will have to go down the RMA route.

what you think ?

Oh and i have tryed allready putting the voltage higher and relaxing the timings. also running the mem slower at 800. infact now it will not boot at 1066. so looks like the mem is defo broke.

just got some ocz reaper mem this morning only 800 mhz but its all i could get on a sunday :) so hopefully no more crashes untill i get it RMA

Run the extended test. If your using Vista, boot from the CD and start install but instead choose repair, then click the memory diagnostic tool. Choose to reboot and once it reboots it will come to a blue screen with some test on it showing passes, press tab and go to the options. Press down and use 'extended' because the basic isn't very good. You can also change pass from 2 to 1 since you don't need to go more than 1 pass.

Be warned this test takes a few hours and appears to lock up and not update but leave it alone, it's still working. Let it run for a couple hours and it will tell you if there are any errors. And yes, it works, so don't listen to people who say it doesn't.

As for the settings, some times the bios doesn't detect the memory at the proper settings but it's honestly not a big deal because you won't notice a difference between pc 800 (which also means lower voltage) and pc 1066. If you just leave everything on auto settings and let the bios detect, you'll be fine.

thanks chris. mem is broke but reading these boards it shows a lot of people are having problems with ballistix tracer memory

Also, the Phenoms (especially the B2 steppings) do not seem to like to run memory at 1066. You are probably going to have to start at stock DDR800 and clock up slowly in small increments.
