hii, i have a athlon 64 3000+ and a gigabyte of this ram, iv never overclocked and only read abot how to do it today

as i undestand it if i make it 220 x 9 then the 220 is higher tan the ram so it could break my computer? this is the mots iwould be doing because i wouldnt udnerstand how to overclock ram, i got lost when it mention voltage, isit really that hard :( maybe someone wana instruct me :p? i also cant aford any extra cooling -thanks

waht you think of the ram BTW oveclocking sound like so much fun wish i could aford it :( so i gues i am askng in the end if i can run at 220 witout breakin

"this" ram is three different kinds mate :D

but anyway, here's what i do.
1. install memtest to a floppy
2. go into the bios, drop the cpu multi to 7x and the ht link speed to 3x, and bump the fsb up 5mhz
3. with the floppy in, reboot, and memtest will start. use the configuration to go to test #5
4. if you can make it through one pass of test 5, bring the fsb up another 5mhz
repeat #4 until you get errors

once you get errors is where it gets fun:
first option: bump up the voltage one notch. i wouldn't go over 2.8v for the time being.
if more voltage doesn't allow you to pass test 5, you have hit the limit of the ram at the current timings.
go back into the bios, and try raising one timing at a time until you can pass #5 again. if you raise a timing, and it doesn't do anything, change it back down and change the next one. if no single timing works, raise all of them one, and go through and try lowering each one individually until you find the setting that causes instability, and leave that one higher.

yes. this will take you a good long time to do properly. there's quicker ways, but it's not as effective.
 
Ah, the beloved "Test #5" myth. In reality, Test5 is only good for burn-ins. My proc can run Test5 endlessly, but is very quick to flunk #7- unfortunately, this test takes a very long time. You can find more info on this through a quick Google search.

From what I understand, #5 and #7 are very similar, but #7 goes into more depth. The fun part is when my proc is just reaching its limits, because it can pass #7 three or four times in a row, but then crashes badly on the next pass. I am certain my PSU is fluctuating because it is close to its limits, so I'm trying to raise the cash to replace my CoolerMaster 450 with a Blue Storm.

Otherwise, (cf)eclipse is right.
 
actually, i've never had a time where i don't get errors in #5, but i do in #7 :confused:
and i forgot to mention the last step. run memtest straight through. if you get any errors.. any at all, back off 1mhz at a time until you can memtest for 3-6 hours with no errors.

if i change the cpu multi to 7x wouldnt it make my processor run now at 1400, what purpose does this serve? do you mean bump up the fsb of the ram or the processr? how long does mem test #5 last? what is ht link x3 and what purpose does it serve? how far do you think winchester 3000+ can go with stock cooling? i have 2x512mb of ram would i need to change them both or does bios do both at same time

i also dont know how ram timings work, maybe i should just stick to overclocking graphics it looks less complicated :p

you're lowering the cpu multi while you're testing the ram so you can be sure that you're maxing out the ram itself, without having to worry if the cpu is being overclocked too far.
same thing with the ht link multi. as a general rule of thumb, you don't want the final ht link speed to go over 1000mhz. if you leave it at 4x, you'll be good to 250mhz, bit i say 3x just because it doesn't decrease performance in the slightest.

memtest actually has.. 8 tests. you can select which test you wan to run, so you don't have to sit through tests 2, 3, and 4. 4 is particularly time consuming. (you'll make it through test one and most of test 2 in the blink of an eye though)

the winchester.. well it depends on how old it is. no two chips are the same, so i can't really give you a good estimate, it's one of those things you need to find out for yourself :D

and the bios will apply the same timings to both sets of ram.
and generally, lower timings = better, but you can't get the clock speed as high. it's all about finding the balance between loosening timings and raising clock speed to get optimal performance. if the ram you have is what i think it is, 2.5-3-3 timings would allow for the fastest mhz while not letting latencies get too high ;)

also, read the sticky about ram in this forum. you'll learn a lot about what various things do.. though it needs to be updated, it's getting a bit long in the tooth :cool:
