My current rig is just over two years old. It's been a great system. A few days ago I received my MetroVac (woo!), so I blew the dust out of my case, fans and fan filters, and the heatsink, and then I removed the old AS5 and reapplied it.
But I have the upgrade itch.
Antec Nine Hundred Two
E8400 @ 3.6
Asus P5Q Pro
Corsair HX620
Xigmatek S1283
2 x 2GB Corsair DDR2-800 C4 DHX
EVGA GTX 260
1) From what I've gathered the past few days, a good upgrade route is the AMD Phenom II X6 path, such as the 1090T. Micro Center's combo deals are quite tempting, but none of the motherboards really strike at me. I don't want mATX or onboard video, and the ATX boards seem to have fairly unfavorable reviews. I'm done with non-Intel NICs, so whatever board I upgrade to must have Intel.
2) Is the 1090T worth the $30 over the 1055T?
3) I still want to build a web server. I've pondered using the E8400 guts to assemble one, but I would need a cheap video card for it, plus an Intel NIC and a hard drive. It'd be quite overpowered, but I already have a Regor-based WHS box, so I don't really have a need for another system, although I could use it to be an audio recording-only system perhaps. Also, I had wanted to build a small rig for a web server, not something ATX, though I'd be buying a few things instead of a complete system.
4) My GTX 260 is showing its age, but it's too much for a web server, and I've nothing else to put it in. I could try to sell it, but its value is probably in the dumps. However, if I were to upgrade to a Phenom II X6, what would be a good $150-ish video card for it?
Help!
