Help me with my E6600 build.

Building a new E6600 rig and I need a little help with selecting the background hardware. Only my second time building a computer so I'm fairly new to this so bear with me.

Build:

Monitors: (2) 21" Samsung Syncmasters @ 1600x1200 (Purchased)

Processor: OEM Retail E6600 (Purchased)

Case: NZXT LEXA-NP Aluminum Case

Memory: I'm undecided as far as memory goes, I was leaning towards Corsair XMS DDR800 240-pin 2x1g memory. However I'd like to get the most I can out of this system so I was wondering if I should go with DDR1000 or will 800 fulfill most of my overclocking needs? Was also planning on buying low latency ram with timings of 4-4-4-12 or better.

Hard Drive: Was planning on getting a Raptor then I noticed that Seagate had the new 15,000 RPM Cheetahs and I heard you can boot your system up in 6 seconds with one, so I plan on dropping $500 for one of the 74gb Cheetahs. Since I'll have two computers, I don't plan on using this rig for media downloads, so I'm thinking 74 gigabytes should be enough.

CD/DVD Drive: I really, really want a slot load but Plextor is the only one i can find with max speeds and I really, really don't want a Plextor. I've heard only bad things from them so I'm not sure what to do in this department. Anyone have any suggestions for a good tray load with max speeds?

Video Card: Just need something to hold me over untill i can get a couple good DX10 compatible cards.

As far as Motherboards/SoundCards/CoolingDevices/PowerSupplies go I'm somewhat clueless since I haven't gotten a chance to look at the new E6600 compatible motherboards. Money really isn't an object in this department so I'd like something nice, can you guys recommend something for each of these?

I hope you're planning on dropping some cash on a scsi card because those cheetah drives are scsi.

Also, plextor drives are great. I don't know where you've heard the bad reviews from.
 
Aren't raptors SCSI as well?

So I will need an SCSI compatible motherboard, and I'm to assume those are much more expensive than standard ATA mobo's?

Raptors are SATA not SCSI. If he wants to go with the Cheetahs he can just grab a PCI SCSI card.
 
I think there are some SCSI raptor drives, but the popular ones that most people have are SATA.

You'd be hard pressed to find a good SCSI compatible motherboard. You should be looking for a SCSI add in PCI or PCI-e card. I don't know if there are any PCI-e cards though, maybe just PCI.

Dude why do you want to go for scsi or a raptor , if you have money then go for it but i myself have seen the performance of the E6300 overclocked to 2760mhz and i am telling you its enough power, You need a lot of bandwdth to make most of the Conroe.

The raptor are expensive and have shorter lifespan and puting sata 2 hardrives in Raid1 will be better and faster.Also if you have that much money to spend you might as well get thrre hardrives and put thenmin raid.. You cant do that with raptor cos in raid it looses performance.

Also there are new rain cards out and the performance is far better than raptor and in long run be cheaper and a smarter alternative.

At the end of the day why do you demand so much power also now that the conroe is available you will see better sata 2 performance too.Before there were bottlenecks but thats all changind.

Also SCSI is slowly but surley going. Get RAID controller card which are the next level things and far better than your raptor or SCSI.They are a revolutionary product and a killer in performance.

Also the E6600 is good enough and get a decent ram modules , which is very important for overclocking a conroe , especially a conroe should i add.

Conroe demads a lot of bandwidth and bandthwith will come overall if you have tight latencies , It has to make the Float and Int read times efficent , if not you will not see performance increase.Use PCwizrd for this information and see if your overclock is giving gain or just wasted speed.

I don't know that much about hard drives and you SERIOUSLY lost me.
I assumed a HD's speed was determined by it's RPM's therefor a higher RPM is better.

Other than that I don't really know what you're saying...

Edit: I get most of it now, just I've never heard of a RAID controller before.

Nope , remember not neccessarily, its to do with the bus lanes .

What happens on raid is this there are three hardrives (2 minimum) and all have the same files on them ,now what it does it has loads of cache controllers where it reads the most probable information in advance and this RAID controller has loads of special Cache chips and this gives it enough time and space to read infront of what you are going to use.

Raid controller are new in the game and revolutionise the future of hardrives, if i had the money i would definately invest in one and now its user freindly.

I have seen Raptor work in RAID and it looses performance , but three , four , five hardrives and all of it cached in chips you will see amazing click click performance.

So if I have 2 150gb raids it doubles the speeds but I'll only have 150gb to work with?
 
Honestly not to call you out nooh but he's not gonna see better performance with RAID over the raptor. Maybe if he had like 128MB of memory and was forcing constant page file accesses, or was editing huge video files that were too big for memory. But when it comes to everyday multitasking and gaming, the raptor is hands down going to give snappier performance.
