Help me with DynDns

I just setup an account at dyndns.com and I want to set it up in my router. I have a D-link DIR 655 with firmware 1.21 and when I set it up under dynamic dns it wont connect. It'll say "connecting" then disconnect right afterwards. I have my host name and login information correct.

Is my firmware causing me this issue?
 
The DIR-655 is generally a good router for updates.

For server address, you want to pull the menu down at the far right to DynDNS.org. If the firmware is still the same, click the button with the two arrows, that'll put the right server address in. If that doesn't do the trick, use members.dyndns.org or update.dyndns.org in the server address field.



hostname, username, password are.. well, those.
 
I tried all the ones from the drop down box, members.dyndns.org, update.dyndns.org and nothing works. It just says connecting for a couple of seconds then disconnects. Any other ideas? This is driving me nuts.

yeah you should be able to punch that into the router and then give it your pw and it should be happy. When you set it up with dyndns, set it to offline host and it should just work.
 
Put some Tomato firmware on that router. Does your isp allow you to use a different dns server?
 
I had it set to "Host with IP Address." I'll change it and try again. I'm still fairly new to a lot of this stuff.
 
In the info sections it has my ip with (not in DNS) in parentheses.
 
I never thought of that. I have Comcast. I'm just wanting to use it so I can setup a VPN.

Do not take this advice.

Setting it to offline host will return an IP address that points at a parked page.

If you can't get the router to work, you should be able to use one of the downloadable clients that work fine:

I was trying to avoid using one of the clients if the router would just work.
 
that router is dynadns certified.

Open the D-Link router control panel by going to the IP address

http://192.168.0.1/
in a web browser. You will be prompt for a password.+ If you did not setup a password on your router, enter admin for the username and leave the password blank.

Once you are logged into the router click on the "Tools" tab, then Click on the "DDNS" button, as seen below:

On the Dymanic DNS page do the following:

Select the "Enabled" radio button for the DDNS field

Select DynDns.orgfrom the Server Addressdrop down menu

Enter the complete Host Name that you setup with DynDns.com

Enter your DynDns.com Username and Password that you setup

Click the "Apply" button.

If everything is correct, the page will tell you that your router is restarting. Dynamic DNS service with dyndns.comis now configured for your router to automatically update.
 
nicupdate was returning nohost, ern.

Router's actually working fine.. or at least it was at 5:30 eastern.
 
I have done all that and nothing works. I may update to 1.35NA and if that doesn't work I guess try tomato? I don't get why it is not working when its all right?

ok back to square one.
Reset router.
Then go to cmd prompt and enter the following
Netsh winsock reset
Nest ip init reset
Reboot
Disable your firewall. Btw what was your dns set to in windows? Was it on a static one?

Now go back to cmd prompt and enter
Ipconfig /all

Copy and paste it here. Just XXX out your mac address. That's the physical address. We don't need to see that

When you config it on dyndns, you tell it offline host or it wants an IP. Then the router logs into your account and updates it...this is how I have setup the above, I never plug an IP in and use the service updater built into routers or toss out a windows updater client out to update dyndns...

By setting it to offline like this, you can bounce the router after you set it up and then you should be able to log into the dyndns site and see the IP if updated, otherwise it should show as offline. It does come online once it calls back to dyndns...

Setting it to offline when creating the hostname and then updating it with a live makes perfect sense, but you didn't actually explain that until this post.
