Help me with a direction for next build

Hey guys, I have several pieces that could potentially come together to make a great system, but I could go several directions with it, what are your thoughts?

I'm currently running the Gaming PC in my signature, it's currently definitely CPU limited (unsurprisingly). It does however still run most titles admirably at 1080p. Which is quite commendable given the age of the CPU.

Here's some additional hardware I have available to me to sell or to put into a new build:

  • 2x GTX 1080
  • ASUS PRIME Z270-P LGA1151
  • Seasonic FOCUS Plus Series SSR-850FX 850W 80+ Gold
  • 512GB M.2 SSD
So essentially I can go 3 ways:
  • Use the motherboard above to build a GTX 1080 system and pair it with a CPU + RAM
  • Get a new motherboard and run SLI / Multi GPU GTX 1080 system (I believe the mobo does not support SLI), and once again, pair it with a CPU + RAM
  • Sell all of it and start with a fresh new system, perhaps keeping the mobo and I see no reason to part ways with the PSU
I appreciate some brainstorming on this! Maybe there's another approach I'm missing? I'm planning to upgrade to a G-sync monitor at some point in the near future, I would like to go higher than 1080p (1440 or 2160), but it's not a requirement. I'm trying to be somewhat cost-effective.

A 1080 is a decent GPU still. What kind of monitor are you using? (Resolution, refresh rate)

edit
Board does not support SLI. That other x16 slot is only max x4 slot.

Right now it's just a standard 60hz 1080p monitor, but I'm planning on updating to some type of G-Sync monitor. I feel G-sync may have me running into limitations if I go above 1080p.

And yes, I was fairly certain it didn't support SLI.

Buy new CPU/MOBO/Ram/HDD potentially keep the video card or upgrade it.

Trade your old hardware for 1 or 2 good Gsync or supported Freesync monitors.

that's what I would do in your shoes.

Thanks for the ideas! I'm definitely leaning toward likely needing all of the above.

What are your thoughts on running both of my GTX 1080's in one system?

For the handfull of game that will see various levels of use from it? I would sell and go with a RTX 2080 or even 2080ti. SLI is dead in the water until game makers and driver makers get back on board with it.

IMO, get some DDR4, and a cpu second hand, run it on the Z270 board, pop in a 1080 and be done with it.

Seems like a good plan given how badly SLI is supported these days.

I'm thinking a 7700K would do nicely, or even a 7600K ought to do the trick for most of what I'll throw at it.

Don't rule out AMD Ryzen setups. With the new CPUs near launch I'd wait to see what they bring.

Not a bad idea, might be at a pretty attractive price point! Time to re-educate myself on AMD processors, haha.
