I plan on doing a semi upgrade (using current parts from my current rig and buying new parts)

This is what I have so far

AMD Athlon 64 3000+ ~$175
Corsair XMS Extreme Memory Speed Series (Twin Pack)(512MBx2) DDR PC-3200 ~ $231

I am not sure whether to go for a socket 754 or a 939 :(

A bit over my budget (cough) but if I were to go something like that would it be worth it? My current specs are

Pentium 4 2 GHZ
512 DDR PC2100 RAM
A crappy mother board that doesn't allow a CPU bigger then 2.6 and RAM faster then 2100.

that would be a pretty significant upgrade. I'd save a few bones and get Kingston ValueRam, it'll be about $60 cheaper.

You can not buy a 64 3000 for a 939 chipset, just thought you should know. I think the lowest one you can get is a 3500 comin in at just over $300. Also 754 runs single channel ram, and 939 runs dual channel ram. Big differance there. There are alot of things to consider between the two chipsets. Basicly i boild down to, do you have to have a new computer RIGHT now? or can you wait? If you have to get one right now, i would recommend the 754 pin. Otherwise save up some cash and wait on the 939 chips to come down some in price.

Actually, the cheapest Socket 939 processor right now is around $350 (3500+ at Newegg).

Although the dual-channel helps benchmarks, it has proven to be nearly a non-factor in real-world performance. Although I could just be biased because I have a socket 754 (and lovin' it!)

How big of a difference and is it worth the extra cash?

Well the end result, yes its worth the extra cash. But i myself am not willing to pay that much for a chip. Guess i will have to edit my above post, was suppose to say $300 not $200.
Pros-

754
-Out now
-Mature (as its gonna get)
-Cheap

939
-Hella fast (lol, but anything new is)
-Dual channel ram
-Could be possable in the future to have DDR2 implemented (i belive the chip just needs to be revised to accomadate it)
-PCI Express
-Maybe SATA II

Truth be told, the 754 chipset production has stopped. And i would imagain that the mobo will cease very rapidly. If you want to buy for the "here today" go with the 754. Although if you want to buy for the "future" go with a 939 as these are the only athlon64 chips that are being produced now. So you see, you can't really upgrade a 754 as it has already met the end of its life line. LIke i said before, im waiting for the 939 prices to fall.
