Help me understand OSX Virtual Memory

Let me start by stating, that I do know what Virtual Memory is and how it works in Windows, and I thought in general. However, if I open Activity Monitor in leopard to view memory usage, it reports that many of my process use nearly 1GB VM, totaling up to 42GB, if that were the case, my hard drive would be full. So I do not understand something here :confused:
 
It's not mapping that out in the swap file : that's just the memory address space it's allocated for it from the stack, IIRC. If it ever actually starts trying to USE all that for all of them, it has a max limit, I think.
