my isp (cavtel) reset their main servers, and i can connect through my modem fine, when i throw in my router, which has been ok for three years, its a nr041 by lnksys, my connection dies. i just added a 3.47ghz to the horde when this happened from cavtel. linksys support in india or somewhere wants to charge me 29.95 to reset my router. it's simply a software, config problem, and i will NOT pay them to troubleshoot this.

i have been around a few times, and i always been folding, either hit me up on aim, or reply here to help me out...PLEASE!

welp, let's start with the reset. Should be a reset button on there somewhere, when you find it hold it in for 30 seconds or more. That will put it at factory default settings.

This is assuming a cable connection. If you are dsl, or fios that changes the setup a bit. But for cable this should get it going.

Linksys charging for service?? Never had to call them much, but never did they want money. Do you live in the USA? That's just a side question, but if Linksys's polices are changing for the bad I'd sure like to know.;)

Do the reset then leme know how you make out

Luck

I had a field day trying to figure mine out this past weekend. Heres what i did-
shut everything down and unplug the modem and router.
reset router.
plug in modem and wait for the 4 light till its fully up
plug modem into router
plug power into router and power up router, wait for all lights to light
plug router cables to computer (s)
power up main rig - If its ok continue, if not start over
power up other computers
get folding :D
done

Heh, it can be a real bitch when they all get out of sync, no doubt about it. Much better then it used to be though.;)

Is it possible that they've instituted some form of MAC address filtering? I've had that problem on my ISP a couple of different times and eventually had to setup my router to clone the MAC of my main PC so it would connect up.

the service is dsl first and foremost...

mac address sounds right, the guy was trying to have me "clone" my mac address.
i have called linksys on numerous occasions, and this was the first time they tried to charge me a one-time, non-refundable fee of 29.95, since i'm out of warranty. i went off on him, this has nothing to do with warranty, this is a softtware, configuration conflict.

anyhow, i will try that startup procedure and see what happens. this is so frustrating, this router has worked flawlessly for three years.

first of all.. there's a pinhole sized reset button (most likely on the back or bottom) of your router. You'll first want to press that and hold it in for about 20 seconds.. That should reset everything. If that doesn't work, then try contacting your ISP.. and if they cant help you with the router, then you could try resetting your TCP/IP settings and Winsock settings on your computer itself (though this may not help you at all if the problem is truely in the router's configuration, but it might be worth a shot) by going to Start->Run->Cmd...
type:

netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
hit enter... if your under XP nothing will happen on the screen but it will reset it, it will then jump down to the next line.. once it comes back to the command prompt..
type:
netsh winsock reset
it'll say 'successfully reset the winsock catelog' .. then type in 'exit'
and reboot the machine.. that just might help.

I don't know if the configuration of your's is similar, but this is what the setup in my WRT54g has in regards to MAC Cloning options, it might help:

i have cloned my pc's mac address by getting the physical adress through ipconfig, but i still cant hookup through the router.

with router connected, i can ge to its setup screen, 192.168.1.1 i can change whatever settings i need. i have all isp info here, just need to know why this isnt working, it's driving me nuts.

When you said the guy, to whom were you referring? Linksys guy or ISP guy?

With DSL you often times need a host, pass word and of course your router set to PPOE settings. If you did a full reset all that will be gone.

Just to make sure your problem is indeed local call your ISP and run through the setup with them and make sure your modems MAC number matches what they think it is. After that can they ping your modem?

Let’s try to isolate the problem

the guy reffered to was the linksys guy.

cavtel doesnt support routers so i dont know what to do. i have all required info, they can ping my default gateway, and everything is fine on isp side, definately a local (router setup) problem.

next step(s)?

I had to actually reload my firmware on my linksys WRT350N because of problems like this. It would pull an IP from my ISP, it would hand out private IPs but I couldn't get out. Just downloaded the firmware from linksys and flashed it with the same firmware that was already installed, but it fixed the problem.

Ah, ok, this is the part that can get very annoying.

Try the simple tried and tested method first.

Turn it all off. Computer, Router and Modem. Wait 5 or 10 min the first turn on the modem and allow it to finish booting. Double check that the modem settings are correct because it will have reset by this time.

Next turn on your router and allow it to finish booting as well and make sure the “link” light is on. The link light simply means the router can talk to the modem.

Last but not least turn on your pc and allow it to finish booting.

Now the fun part, again, see if It connects to the net.

Everything I just mentioned is more or less right out of the router trouble shooting section, but sometimes in our frustration we forget the simple stuff.

Now, if it still fails to connect double click on your tcp ip settings or right click and check properties. If the address shown is not with in the dhcp range of the modem or you are getting that stupid MS default address setting we can try a manual setting.

Let me know how this part goes first though. Don’t be afraid to try this a few times as noted by gwarren007, it can take a few tries.

Just noted the post above me, have you updated your firmware in a while?

okay, smackshead!

last night the first "support" guy from linksys told me to click obtain ip automatically, in very broken english, so i GUESS thats what he said...

anyhow, i was sitting here waiting for a reboot, and i got to thinking, wait a minute...my isp issued me a static ip. so i got back into the setup screen and set up my "wan" settings using the ip, subnet, and gateway issued to my modem.

i dont know if thats how i was suppoed to fix it or not, but i know i just got over 8ghz back to folding in one room.

thanks for all the help guys, i hope this is a fix for good!

if you were given a static ip that could very easily have been your problem esp considering that you are now up and running chances are you won't have any further problems:) grats on getting 8ghz back up;)
