hi,

i just bought a new macbook and I am lost!!!
it feels so strange after windows.

i cannot get azureus to work. and tomato torrent doesnt work either.

Thanks ppl,
Abhissekk

I myself have been thinking about going over to the 'Mac side', I am interested to see how people respond to your question =). And the problems are you facing, if you could reply to your thread with the most dramatic changes you have noticed, I would greatly appreciate it.

I switched this time last year, best thing I ever did. The OS is far superior to windows. It might take you a bit to get used to, but once you learn all the shortcuts and neat things that you can do, you'll really love it.

As far as your two programs you are trying to run, i've no idea about tomato turrent, but make sure you are running the intel specific version of az found at this link

http://azureus.aelitis.com/wiki/index.php/Intel_Macs

A good website to check out for you would be versiontracker.com , that's where I find all my freeware and shareware programs for mac. Make sure you read comments left by other users though, they often help you troubleshoot, and or find the links that you will need to get specific versions that you will need.

There are a lot of mac guides as well out there, I would suggest you start at the apple.com website under support and check around there. Then from there do some searches for mac guides or mac forums then choose your poison. I would recommend macforums.com for some really good guides, and they have a good community of mac users there that have helped me out whenver I needed.

Best of luck, welcome to a better computing experience!

I just recently switched from a gaming pc w/ windows to a intel core duo mac mini, best thing i've done in a while. Mac OSX is wayyyy better than xp or vista will ever be. Things like spotlight, dashboard, and expose are a godsend, and NO VIRUSES! Thats a big deal, i always had to do a virus scan every day, but not anymore. And ilife is amazing, everything works togethor seemlessly. I always used to be a mac hater, but now im a believer and ill never buy another xp machine unless i need it for work or something :(. The few days was a little confusing, but you get used to everything really quick, everything's perfect! you wont regret switching!

hey fellow macsters(please excuse the expression!),

one thing is for sure, after switching to mac all that I knew is useless. :p
for 2 whole days i am been installing stuff. actually reading install instructions for applications!!!

but one thing is, mac os x's experience is definately more polished and sophisticated.
i am sleepy.
and tired.

its awesome.

now i am babbling.

;)

About Azureus... What exactly is the problem? Are you running into install/startup/downloading errors? Tomato Torrent is a joke, as it's not uPnP compatible (rendering it useless unless you're on a DIRECT connection to the internet, ie: No routers or wireless). If it's a downloading problem, I'm sure you just need to set your router (if you have one, if not... well, disregard this sentence :)) to forward the needed downloading ports, as it doesn't automatically do that like on a windows box.

I live on both the Mac and Windows, and would never consider using a windows computer for serious work... there are just too many things to go wrong.

As for the most dramatic change... Multitasking. I'm serious... My athlon X2 (with a gig of ram mind you) barely beat my 867mhz Powerbook G4 at opening every folder (there were 450) in a test folder, with Word and Internet Explorer open. They were both ridicuously slow, but still... Bottom line, I never get any lag related problems on the mac... No slow screen redraws while alt-tabbing out of memory hungry 3D applications, no hangs while trying to access network devices that had *recently been removed* (Ahem, "The path to the requested resource blahblahblah"), etc. ad nausium. Oh, and that there are very few games for the mac, that was a HUGE change (ty bootcamp, Oblivion looks AWESOME on a MBP).

The problem with azureus is that it fails to launch. it bounces couple of times in the dock and then disappears. i am thinking that it might be java thats messing up.

i have a macbook with 512 mb ram and its stuttering. i tunes takes a good 2-3 bounces to load. firefox is unstable(which is shocking as in the pc world, firefox is very stable).
everything else is just so smooth. i guess it will take some getting used to not clicking on firefox for everything.

anyone ideas about the azureus problem?
though tomato torrent works fine, i still like azureus's powerful features.

also, if while text editing, i want to jump to the next word, what key combination do i use?
in windows i am used to pressing control and arrow keys.

Don't know about azureus, But I liken it to moving to England, and driving there, (VS here in America where I live)

It's suddenlt right-hand drive on the left side of the road. and they have all the same kinds of safety warnings marked, but they are just marked differently.

If you are used to using keyboard shortcuts you will likely want to Swap the Command and Control Keys in the keyboard system preferences pane. I did it because I use shortcuts like Ctrl+Z,X,C,V,A (Undo, Cut, Copy, Paste, Select All) They're all the same on a Mac but they use the command key (Apple Logo Key, or the Windows Key on PC keyboards)

Regarding the Azureus problem: make sure you have the universal version. You can find this out by highlighting the program and hittimg Apple-I (for Get Info). It should describe the type as Application (Universal).

For text editing, I believe it's Option and left/right to skip from word to word. Using the Apple key will in turn put the cursor at the start of end of the line depending on the arrow key used.

wow!
the england anology is appropriate.
i am from india myself, and it kinda applies to me(because India is right hand drive)

but I feel switching to a mac(after 10 years with windows) is like breaking all but one finger. you still can work, it will be slow initially, but as your fingers heal(ie learn mac os x), you will speed up :p

thanks for the option+arrow keys tip. makes text manipulation so much easier.

and how is transmission as a bit torrent client.

I posted above the link to the intel azureus that you need to download to work with the intel macs. Hopefully you are on that one.

Transmission is nice, if you're not behind a router. I could never get it to really pull any data in my setup. Stupid NAT-Wireless :(.

What is a good torrent program to use if you are behind a router? I can get like 20k/s DLs with transmission, but I suppose I should be expecting more.

Azurerus is the only one that I know of. It is such a resource hog but there isn't anything better out there for the OSX side.

I frequently get Azureus d/l speeds of 200kbps per torrent if I forward my ports correctly.

i configured my router to forward the ports and i got 100+ kbps consistently using both tomato torrent and transmission.

How does one do this?

it is simple enough.

just check the port the torrent software is using.
log in to the router admin interface.
go to the virtual servers settings or the firewall settings, depending on the router.

set the incoming port as the same as what software is using.
set the ip address the same as your computer's.
set the outgoing port same as software.

having done that, just save it and restart the router.
if you have done everything correctly, it should work now.

if it still doesnt work or my directions are not clear to you, just search on google for the specific brand of the router.

So there's no utorrent for macs!! I love that app. And whats with firefox not being stable?

just wanted to voice my possible switch here. I just tried vista beta 2.
lololol what more needs to be said?

On my g4 powerbook it freezes, lags, crashes alot. probably something to do with firefox's memory leak.

personally ive never found a reason to use firefox or camino. i have them but safari seems to have no trouble w/ any site i look at so i just use that.

There are hundreds of reasons to use firefox, they are called extensions. firefox is the most versatile browser out there and I am sorry that mac users don't have such a stable version as windows or linux users are accustomed to. You guys are missing on something special.

With windows, all i ever use is firefox. but on my macbook it has terrible performance.
it hung several times and crashed too.
i suggest camino or safari.

another question!
how do i get applications to start up automatically after a restart?
like in windows we have startup folder.

thanks

If the program in question is in the dock, you can have it load at startup by right clicking on it and checking the start on login option

Yes, I know that.
I automatically want to start an application and dont want to put it in the dock, is there any way to do that?

Firefox is overrated. A good 99.5% of all the zomg plugins out there suck beyond all reason anyway.

I often hit 500kbyte/s+ speeds in Azureus, and that's behind a router.

Jesus thats blazing. I usually only get around 200 tops on utorrent behind a router. Of course i didnt do any of the optimizing stuff with the ports or whatnot.

I am quite sure you have tried all of them anyway

edit : here are some that rocks

flashgot
foxytunes
gmail notifier
mouse gestures
gmail space
fireftp
amazing media browser
ctrl tab preview (ie7 has this, safari perhaps never will)
firefox showcase
crash recovery
restart firefox
chatzilla

Tried all what? Bittorrent clients? I tried a couple. I never analyzed performance. I just know I get good speeds from Azureus.

I am sorry I was unclear, I was being Firefox' advocate and I meant extensions when I asked you (well sort of asked you) if you tried them all. I can understand Mac users not using Firefox though, I really do, because it doesn't even feel like the Windows or Linux version for some reason and it crashes about 10 times more often.

I haven't tried all Firefox extensions, but I did use a highly advanced stochastic sampling method to predict that most of them are pretty awful. :p
