I just bought a pair of M-Audio AV40s to replace my Logitech G51 for music. I listen to a lot of bass heavy music. Here are the sub I am looking at for under $150:

Dayton SUB120 http://www.amazon.com/Dayton-SUB-120-Watt-Powered-Subwoofer/dp/B000C9NV78

Dayton SUB100 Amazon.com: Dayton SUB-100 HT Series 10" 125 Watt Powered Subwoofer: Electronics

Dayton SUB80 Amazon.com: Dayton SUB-80 8" HT Series 80 Watt Powered Subwoofer: Electronics

Polk 10" PSW10 (this seems to be the best value) Amazon.com: Polk Audio PSW10 10-Inch Monitor Series Powered Subwoofer (Single, Black): Electronics

BIC V80 Amazon.com: BIC AMERICA V-80 8" 100 Watt Powered Subwoofer: Electronics

Id prefer to spend $100 or under if possible. The Dayton sub120 at 12" might be overkill for my bedroom. I live in a small to medium sized bedroom so would be a 10" be good enough?

Get the dayton sub-100. Dayton makes decent budget subs, polk audio does not (at least to my ears anyways). Not sure about BIC.

As for your question about a 10" being sufficient for your room. Well that depends. If you don't have the money for a 10" get an 8" model and if you have the money for a 12" then get a 12". Simple as that. A bigger driver will always give you better base regardless of room size or volume. And any sub, even an 8", delivers plenty of "boom" if that's what your looking for. I have a 4" pos logitech sub from an old dell surround sound system in my closet and even it can deliver enough "boom" to practically shake the foundation of the house, of course that doesn't mean it delivers good quality bass. Not sure at what point in time society decided louder = better when it comes to sound.

Why not? A lot of people are recommending Daytons for music
Low end subs are often more muddy/boomy sounding which is fine for monotonous movie sound effects, but not as forgiving with music/vocals.

Another $25-$50 buys you something noticeably better as aZn_plyR and khansolo linked above. An extra $100 can buy you something a LOT better but i realize you may not want to double your budget.

Otherwise i'm pretty sure the Dayton sub80 and sub100 would sound less muddy than the sub120, at least from what i've read.

A 10" sub would be more than fine in a small/mid sized bedroom.

Have you heard the Daytons before? I definitely dont want to spend over $120 at this point. What is better than Dayton for the price?

For more options, LOLANG posted this link in my thread:

Yes, i own one of the older sub-100's, they revise them every few years so i don't know how it compares to newer versions. It's definitely decent for the price and comparable to some lower-end Sony subwoofers in it's price range back then. I keep it at one of my PC workstations in my home and it excels for that purpose.

Not sure what's better for the price, i was pointing out that the other subs people linked were better for just a little more.

How is this one btw? I think im going to looking on craigslist since shipping kills most deals

http://sandiego.craigslist.org/nsd/ele/1976889986.html

seems to be a discontinued model
That may be the discontinued model i have. He is lying about the original price he paid, he almost positively did not pay more than $120 for it.

But for $75 nothing will come close, and if you seriously are scrimping for cash then it sounds like a great buy, i'd probably go for it.

Or you could hold out to see what gems $120 would get you in the used market, takes some patience and lots of digging though.

Ya judging by the current $100 price, I doubt he paid $200 for it. $150 max Id say...

How does that model compare to the SUB100? Basically it is either the craigslist one for $75 or a SUB100 for $115+$10 shipping. So it will cost $50 more for the SUB100 before tax.

Try the $75 one from craigslist. With the outlined buget you will not do any better then that.
If you don't like it put it back on craigslist.

It is a sub-100 he is selling on craigslist, but a previous revision, i googled the product number he provided just to be sure..

I'd go for it if i were you ;)
