I'm running an IBM 80gb drive @ home right now, and it makes this really loud noise every once in a while that sounds like the drive is going full speed and then stops suddenly, then picks back up. It's really got me worried about the data that's on there.

I'm looking for something along the same capacity but with a faster seek time (dont ask me what the seek time is on this HD, I dont have the model number in front of me). SATA or ATA doesn't really matter, really. but price does. i'd like to not breach $125.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

if noise is a problem, wd offers a 'quiet drive' that is very quiet. however, that drive only has a 2mb cache. i've had nothing but good experience with 8mb cache wd's and seagates.... imo the seagates are alittle quieter.

Take a look at the Seagate Barricudas. These hard drives are extremely quiet compared to WD.

silence is golden, but i'll sacrifice a bit (not a lot like the raptors) to get some better performance. if i could find something that's a screaming fast drive but is a bit on the noisy side, i could deal.

i'd second the seagate 8mb drive. i'm pretty sure they are available in sata and ide at about the same price, so its totally your choice.

i'm just alittle biased towards wd drives as every comp i've ever built (aside from scsi drives / servers) they've never failed me, whereas i've had some problems with seagate (scsi drives & old ide drives), and major problems with maxtor, i dont even want to talk about it  .

anyway, at this point seagate has extremely solid product and good warrantee, so wd or seagates should be on top of your list. if sound is an issue, go for the seagate as again i feel its alittle quieter. with the case closed, i really cant hear the difference between the barracuda and the wd special edition, but with the case open its clear that the seagate is quieter.

hope this helps

:D I'm biased towards Western Digital as well. Try these:

WD 160GB IDE 8MB cache >> $118
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-144-203&catalog=14&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

WD 120GB SATA 8MB cache >> $109
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-144-151&catalog=14&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

WD 120GB IDE 8MB cache >> $91.50
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-144-118&catalog=14&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

WD 80GB SATA 8MB cache >> $89
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-135-106&catalog=14&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

WD 80GB IDE 8MB cache >> $70.50 (if ordered sometime in the next four hours)
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProdu...-144-122&catalog=14&manufactory=BROWSE&depa=0

Hopefully, that helps a bit.

not to change the subject, but doesnt windows and some motherboard bios's have serious problems recognizing hard drives larger than 137gb? i remember reading somethings here and htere about it... is that something corrected with windows xp or is that still a problem at large?

i mean, if its just a windows problem, thats no big deal, you just partition the drive into 2 separate partitions, with no partition larger than say 130gb to be safe. but do drives this large still pose a problem with motherboard bios's? anyone know anything about this?

if thats not a concern, the 160 gb drive would be the obvious choice

All you need to do is install SP1. Windows won't have a problem recognizing those larger drives.
