Im so nervous right now..

I am running 2008 R2 SP1 with exchange 2010

I have been working on an exchnage server for a little over 2 weeks now.. I got it all up and running. I got my domains pointed to it and its running great.

Today I got the windows backup software configured to do backups... I then rebooted... and now it keeps trying to go into recover mode and looking for a backup to restore..

Im so screwed because all our mail is here and now nobody int he comapny can get mail.

somehow the system drive changed to drive e and it wont boot into windows.. Im so scared... I spent days getting this, and now I have all these users needing maill 20 or so mailboxes..

can somebody help me please.. I will pay you if need be... I will post my phone number.. I just got finished setting this up and getting everybodys mail synced to this server...

I was just about to make a backup when this happened...

i pulled the drive out and the data is still there, but for some reason its no longer showing drive C, it shows the drive as drive E..

im very nervous because my boss went to Spain yesterday and if I have to reinstall this, his phone that he has with him will have to be reconfigured..

please tell there is a way to change the system drive back to C without reinstalling..

I had not other issues..

If somebody can pm me or call me.. HELP..

I feel like im not explaining right... all I know is the computer wont boot off the system drive and it keeps booting off some virtual drive trying to do a repair...

please somebody help me..
 
What I would do before anything else, if you can do it, is to make a clone of your physical drive. That way you can monkey around with the clone and not screw the original.

What drive is C now? Just go into the bios and switch things around? Did you plug in an eSata or any other type of drive/device that may have taken C during reboot?
 
Did you insert a USB stick or anything by chance?

What about during the install, did you have a USB device inserted? I have seen this totally screw up a windows install as depending on the bios it might place the USB device as primary. Those all in one card readers are notorious for that. Not that you'd have that on a server, but just grasping at straws here.
 
What they said..... try re-inserting the USB drive if you had one in there... I actually have a server that did that to me. The main drive is F: now. I never had it not boot for me though....
 
I tried putting the hard drive back in and no it was not a usb drive... nor is there any usb devices attached except for the keyoard/mouse

when I put the secondary drive in, the boot drive goes to e:, when i take it out it goes to d:

why does server 2008 r2 not have a bootup repair like 7?

I put the drive in my windows 7 box and did a full backup of it... then I reinstalled server 2008 on a different drive so that there would be a boot partition point to C: I then pulled that drive out and restored the backup I made on top of data.. no dice..

im freaking out here.....

I cant go through the setup process of exchange 2010 again... because I will have to reatach all the mailboxes and resync it... My boss is in spain and I have no idea how he would be able to do that.. he does not get back until next weekend and he needs his email..

anybody know how to use the command line to alter the MBR and point it back to the drive?
 
what is this "windows backup software" you used. things went bad after you ran that?
try this:


You will need a Windows 7 x64 DVD.

1. Boot from your Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 DVD.
2. Repair
3. Command Prompt

Note: I only had one drive and that drive was set for C: as the boot so the setup was fairly basic... if your setup is more complex you may want to consider this a bit more... but it should still work.

4. rename c:\boot\BCD bcd.old : this will backup your bcd file just in case you want it.
5. Delete c:\boot\bcd
6. Restart your computer
7. Remove your WS2008R2 DVD and install the W7x64 DVD.
8. Boot from the DVD and do a repair.
9. It will offer to repair automatically accept.
10. Reboot and this is the "trick" boot the DVD again and do a repair. Keep doing this process until it does not find anything wrong.
11. Your server should boot again.

and if this does not work... Is there a way I could reinstall server 2008 r2 and somehow import all my exchange stuff? or is this so tied into AD that it will still create different users and therefore require a resetup on the client end?

I installed acronis server 9.1

but after I had try to do an image with the built in server 08 r2 backup software that comes with it...
 
I have just now found out that acronis 9.1 will wokr on server 2008 but not on server 2008 r2...
I think this is what screwed me...

If it's critical the best option is to call MS and create a case. They are pretty good.
