After bitching everyone out in another thread about an hour ago for evangelizing without any backup, I am giving everyone another chance at redemption. I am building a machine for my friend. I have $400 for a vid card. Should I buy an eVga 6800 GT or ATi X800XTPE? Here are the qualifications:

1. I don't care when it gets here.
2. It's an Athlon 64 system w/ 1GB RAM
3. Keep in mind new nVidia driver performance as well as the Cat 4.7 beta driver perf. increase.

Go for it. And thanks...

The cards are so similar in performance that personal preference is really the only road block in the way of your decision. If you think SM 3.0 will be important tomorrow, grab an nVidia. If you like the Cat drivers, grab an ATI. Stay loyal or jump ship. It's up to you no matter how hard some of the newbsicles around here declare that one company or card ownz another.

Noobie speaks truth bigtime. I'm switching to Nvidia on this one, I like new tech to play with.

I went with the BFG 6800 GT OC card and I love it! I can't wait until we get some SM3.0 support going in some of these current games.

Unless there's a very good deal somewhere, I don't think you can get an XTPE for near $400.

gateway has it for 399 now...do a quick search...

but i think the choice is obvious...

my vote goes for x800 xt pe

The gateway x800xt's aren't going to ship until end of July if you order today.

Correct me if I'm wrong but the X800XT is ATIs $500 vidoecard wile the 6800GT is nvidias $400 videocard, thus you are comparing 2 cards that are not in the same class. X800 Pro should be compared to 6800GT.

Now if you are getting X800XT for the X800Pro price, I think the choice is obvious.

Yes and no.. The GT is one hell of a performer according to the benchmarks. I have to kind of say that the GT really is the way to go right now. SM3.0 and the card is fast as hell.

I'd go with the 6800, but wait for the prices to drop after this initial surge. The 6800 appears to be the faster of the two and has a better feature set. Also, nVidia-based cards seem to have more manufacturers which deviate from the reference design. I figure I'll wait and see who puts the best cooler/memory on their card (while still at a reasonable price).

Got a quarter I can borrow Mr. Chicken? :p

Along with 500 dollars, we'll test the probablity of coin flipping. :D
