Help me pick out a receiver

I plan on buying/ordering a new receiver this weekend to replace my 30 year old and now deceased Pioneer SX-780. I'm not entirely sure where to start with researching this subject.

I plan on pairing this with a pair of Yamaha NS-6490's for now and later adding a subwoofer.

I also have Beyerdynamic DT-770's as my primary headphones to get an idea of what I'm used to in terms of sound quality.

Any advice appreciated, I want to order something by Sunday as I'm sick of using my monitors onboard speakers.

Budget of around $200. I don't really need surround but I want HDMI hook ups so it looks like I need to get a surround receiver.

$200 is basically pick the entry-level model of any brand, they are more or less the same. Or hit up craigslist for an older gen receiver, you might get a decent deal.
 
I'm with atari on A4L. Their refurbs are really solid IME, and $229 for a Denon 1613 will hold you for a good while. A slightly cheaper amp/receiver that can't drive 4 ohms is a waste of money, IMO. You want to be able to choose speakers first, then upgrade electronics, especially on a budget.
 
CHeck accessories4less. I picked up a Denon 1612 refurb there under $200 and it's been flawless for my PC use. It drives a pair of paradigm studio 10s with no effort and it sounds very clean.
 
So I haven't ordered anything as of yet due to it being tax season and my winter heating bill was really high...

Anyways, was looking again and came across this Denon AVR-1513 for $100 ($120 shipped). From what I see it's solid but nothing special. Has just barely enough input as well, but its $100 and looks decent.

Thoughts? These are going for slightly more used and $150 (free prime shipping) on amazon for a new one.
Am I better of springing for the more pricey AVR-1613 or Yamaha RX-v475?
 
It'll probably be fine for your use case. Only gripe I have with it is spring clips, but its not a deal breaker.

well for $100~ that denon is pretty decent... I am (admittedly) sort of a yamaha fan boy.. if you did decide to go with the V475 (which i wholeheartedly approve of doing) might as well go new as you can get a non refurb for $300~ so only about $30 more than the refurb

of course it is upto you... if it is worth 3x times the price you get more power (115Watts vs 75watts) network capabilities , you can control the yammy with their smrt phone app .. i use this with my RX-V573, I find the SQ of these yamaha's to really be very very good to my ears the amoung the very best. If you get the new Yamaha you would also get a 3yr warranty.


however blah blah that denon should be good for what you are looking for ...man those spring clips however :rolleyes: hate those things


one other split difference option $170 HTR-3066 (apparently like RX-V375 (loses network stuff among a few other things).

also keep an eye out for floor models / sales local we got our RX-V573 on sale @ fry's for $300 something over a year ago.. it really has just been a excellent receiver.

however increasing your budget to $300 opens up the options quite a bit. Found a Denon AVR-1613 for under $300 taxes in as a display model.
