Help me pick out a power supply

Currently i have been experiencing random shutdown issues where the computer screen goes into power save mode, and the computer acts like its turned on (LEDs say it is) but it obviously isnt. Here's my current setup with an antec true power 430W

case = P180 (so power supply is in the basement of the case, thermally isolated from the mobo, but its in the same compartment as 4x200gig sata drives)
drives = 4x200gig sata drives, 250gig ide drive for system
graphics card = nVidia 6200 pciE
other = ati theater 550pro tv card
dvdcdrw card

My setup hasnt exactly been stable since i set it up, but its gotten worse in recent days, (KO'd 3 times today). Also, as a side note for diagnostics, after it hangs, i have to turn it off, and unplug the power supply for 5~10 minutes and then plug it back in in order for it to boot up again.

edit - trying to stay under 80 bucks

Ive been looking at the antec smartpower 2.0 500W power supply, but im open to suggestions. Do you think i need more.....also do you think itd be good to go after a atx12V 2.0 power supply or not for 'future' proofing.

Take a look at the Antec Trio, from 450-500W would be best for you. Not sure of exact wattage of Trio that falls in this range however.

No.

I am currently not recommending the Trio considering the plethora of better choices for the money.

Their is a 480 (not exact wattage but somewhere around there)W for $65 on eWiz. Pretty good to me. Considering it is Seasonic made, although not the highest quality of Seasonic stuff but a great supply nonetheless.

With the p-180 case you need long cables,
but with your system you need very little power, good luck finding that combination.

Check Silverstone, I think they have a low power PSU with long cables.

Good Luck,
Dave

No luck at Silverstone. :(

The emphasis is that this is a P-180, so we need long cables.

Since the Enhance is a better quality for the money than a cheaper-grade Seasonic, perhaps the decision needs to come down to cable length.

Apparently, the Enhance cables are all 50cm long (19.68")

What's the legth of the cables on the Antec 430W?

heh, the cables on the antec 430w are 'just' long enough...thats all i gotta say. I remember i brought my DVDRW drive off of the top spot in the tower because the power didnt reach that far. Other than that everything seems fine...not any extra cable length for good routing or anything, but it does the job.

Side note: my probs are totally power supply problems...from a cold start it wouldnt turn on for a while this morning....then it eventually did. Ugh. She's a going.

Edit: what do you think of the Antec Smartpower 2.0 500W ?

just thinking because it has 2 fans on it front and back where the need to be for the antec p180 (up and down for the power supply runs into a wall pretty quick...for those of you not familiar with a p180 case)

Edit Edit: No i will not be running SLI ever, and probably wont upgrade this computer beyond what it currnetly is (besides maybe a few HDDs...man im a media hog). It is my MCE box / file server /ocasional use rig (damnit, apple better get their ass in gear and release the core2 duo rev of the MBP)

One more thing to add for you guys. I need a UPS or something with hella good AVR. Why?...i live in a crappy house (that im not allowed to re-wire) and when my sorta-mini-fridge kicks in...well u get the idea. And no, i cant put the fridge on a different circuit...although i wish i could. Unless i put my fridge in the living room or something...but then my roomates would drink all my beer  :p

Currently i have a dynex 800AVR that i picked up from best buy..but i dont think thats doing the job, and thats what slowly but surely killed my power supply...any ideas?

I've had 4 different Antec power supplies die (or start to go bad) on me within the last year. Two of them came with Antec Sonata cases (SL-350), one was a TruePower 2 430, and the other a SmartPower 450. Thankfully, all were still under warranty... but no more Antec power supplies for me. I have a 4 year old Enermax 480 that is still humming along with spot on voltages for all rails. My main rig sports an OCZ 520 powerstream (love that the rails are adjustable).

I've always liked Tripplite and APC for my UPS needs... just make sure you buy one with enough capacity for your system's needs. Most come with "hardware protection" insurance these days too!

Good Luck!

Im dont so much care about keeping my UPS up and running for a long period of time when the power goes out, but a really good AVR. The only ones ive seen with good AVR are like 300 bucks. All i want is the AVR tho, not the UPS so much.

For WHAT?!?! a 3000VA?!?!

You can get 1000VA/600W UPS's with AVR for under $100 all day long.

This is just copied and pasted from a thread from yesterday:

Ultra 1025VA: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1815467&CatId=20

Ultra 1000VA: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=770423&CatId=20 (pretty much same thing w/o LCD)

Opti-UPS 1000VA: http://www.directron.com/es1000c.html

Radian 1500VA: http://www.provantage.com/radian-technologies-rpf1500~7RDIP002.htm

There's also a Belkin 1500VA that has AVR for about $169.

And 1000VA is enough for most people. I had one that would keep my PC w/ two 7800GTX's up for 15 minutes when the power went out. Have a 2000VA now that sells for $200, but really the only reason I have it is because it was a product sample (why not, right?)

I really only need ~ 5 min or so so that i can save my work or whatever and shut down. The more wattage the better tho :)

Engineering Principle: When in doubt, make it stout.
