Alrighty, I've got an Intel 875P based EPoX motherboard. I'm running a Northwood 2.4 and 2 GB of RAM.

Now my question is this: What would you recommend as an upgrade while maintaining the motherboard?

I was thinking of getting a 3.2E and 2GB of DDR400+ but would that change in speed be noticible over the Northwood core 2.4?

Question 1: 3.2E IF you have exhausted all resources in overclocking that 2.4. I had a 2.4 that ran all day @ 3.3 or so. You could get some great cooling (Koolance, Swiftech, build your own, etc.) for the price of a 3.2, PLUS transplant it to your next rig if you desire.

Question 2: Yes. Also, the 3.2E's are good overclockers....however, see above. E's run warmer than Northwood, as I'm sure you're aware.

Would a 3.2E be faster than a 2.4 Northy? Yes. Would a 3.2 Northy be faster than a 3.2E? Yes. I vote overclock the 2.4, and take the money you would have spent on the 3.2 and invest in a good cooling solution.

Except for watercooling he'd be able to get a top end air cooling system and still have money left over.

i used to OC to 3.2 without issue on swiftech water cooling, eheim pump, my own radiator, 2 120mm fans and a heater core from an 85 E350 van w/high output heater.. but i leave the box on a lot, and i don't feel comfortable leaving it unattended

i've got a thermalright ax-478 + vantec tornado cooling the northwood, and i get ~32C idle and ~35C load..

my ulterior motive is building a machine for my girlfriend, because she's stuck with a K6-2 500... so my plan was to get a mobo for her, move the northwood and ram and just upgrade my cpu and memory (it's our 5 year anniversary, and i bought her the jewelery stuff already and she really wants a computer..) but i just prefer getting stuff that's warrantied so i don't get stuck with something along the road. overly cautious, i guess.

Now if you were a good boyfriend, you would just build her a new computer and give her all-new stuff... (though if I were you, I'd do the exact same thing.... :D )

I suggest that you get the 3.2GHz Northwood processor over the Prescott version. The Northwood processors have less heat issues and a slight edge on the Prescotts in the OC department (but that's debatable...). But NewEgg and ZipZoomFly have the 3.2GHz Northwood for about $262, while the 3.2E Prescott sells for $212 on NewEgg and $214 on ZZF.

Of course, you could always get another 2.4C and overclock that for her.... ;)

now that i've settled this out a bit, i'm trying to find a moderately priced cpu cooler. i think i might get her one of the arctic cooling series coolers for p4's, since she's real big on silence. my box makes her cringe when it's on because of the sunon tornado and 4 50.3 cfm fans screaming.... frankly, i'd like to change that a bit too

what air cooling systems are popular for prescotts and/or northwoods nowadays? i've been out of the loop for awhile...
