Ok, I've read Jarad's FAQ and searched the web, and have found little about this HTT multiplyer option.

My rig is listed below. I'm on the 1004 beta bios.

FYI, i'd like to attempt something like this guy did at AT:
HTT Mult 3x
FSB 300
vcore 1.625v
dim 2.9v
CPU Mult: 9x (Stock)
Timings 7-3-3
PCI Bus 110 @ 2656MHz

ASUS A8N SLI
1GB - Corsair PC4000 TwinX
This, for those who arent reading carefully, like most forum goers :mad: is a 3000+ winchester

But, I do not understand what the HTT multi is, and what it does.
From what I've read it appears to be (HTT multi * CPU freq= FSB or final HTT speed)

Can anyone outline the settings I should attempt with my setup?


The reason I havent gone balls out and experimented is because I dont want to hurt anything.. and I have no idea about this HTT/FSB fiasco.

i know as long as the PCI bus is at 33.3mhz I should be safe, but still dont know what to do with the HTT frequency multiplyer.



I havent overclocked since my Athlon 700mhz Thunderbird.. and back then it was pretty much:

get a board with a PCI lock
unlock processor multi with #2 pencil
take whatever FSB * whatever multiplyer
raise the voltage if needed

and you were set!

What the heck is goign on with this HTT and what should i attempt?
I dont even know what the safe voltages are for this CPU.
 
Just to be safe, I would start with the following.

fsb 250
htt 4x
make sure RAM is running 1:1if you have PC4000 or use the DDR166 setting if its slower.
set the timings to their default values in the bios, do not set them By SPD.
Set your CPU voltage +5%.
Set your VDimm to 2.75

See if its stable there, it should be.

You should be able to use htt4 up to 260 fsb, above that go 3x.

Underclock your RAM if you have any doubts, eliminate that variable. If you decide the RAM kills your overall performance, you can always upgrade.

so... if you are running stock at 200mhz fsb ..then leave HTT at 5

5 x 200 = 1000

if you are running at 300mhz fsb then you have to run HTT at 3 at most ..

3 x 300 = less than 1000


..you will have to experiment to see what your setup can handle

for overclocking A64's , you have the HTT to content with as well as overall speed of chip of which 2.6'ish ghz is about what most people get ...and then you will have to play with mem dividers to see what fsb your memory can handle .. as well as how much voltage is needed to run your chip and memory at whatever speed you settle on ..

which of these: CAS 2.5 7-4-4

corrosponds to the settings in the bios? Theres a ton of latency options and I'm not sure which is which.
 
By the way, you want to set HT to 3 or 4, not HTT. HTT is the new "FSB" setting.

The 939 fsb runs up to 1000Mhz. To calculate what yours is, you take HT x HTT (CPU frequency).

So a stock 939 would be HT=5, HTT=200. Which gets you 1000Mhz.

Then you have the multiplier, which varies depending on your chip. Yours is 10, so to calculate your processor's speed, you take Mult x HTT.

So again for yuor chip, you have 10 x 200 = 2000Mhz or 2.0Ghz.

Now like as previously stated, you want to keep the FSB under 1000Mhz. So if you raise the HTT over stock 200, you need to lower HT to 4. If your HTT is over 250, you need to lower HT to 3. Etc...

Understand?

I now have it at 2.5ghz

heres the settings

FSB 250
HT 4X
SPD AUTO (I dont know what 2.5 7-4-4 corrosponds to in my bios)
VDIMM AUTO (I figured since I'm running DDR500 speeds with these settings, why raise it)
CPU VOLT 1.5V (I dont know what "+5%" from stock is)
it wont boot on any less than 1.5@ these settings

BTW that guide from Scott is awesome.

I like how it tells you: find the max of your mem first ect. and so on.

The most practical guide I've found, def better than all the others I read that are stickied.
But I have overclocked in the past, but its been years.. for someone else it might not be the same experience.

I'm curious on my RAM ceiling..

at least I know now how to do it "the right way" in case my random experimenting fails.
 
Yeah I wish they'd sticky it, the guy that wrote it probably put a lot of work into it...it's pretty comprehensive!

If he hadn't written it I know I definitely wouldn't have been able to get as far as I did...

A sticky would be cool, since I think it's helpd alot of people out, but that's up to the mods if they feel it's up to par. I basically looked at the situation like I did when I first wanted to overclock....what does this mean, how does this work, et cetera, then tried explaining the best I could without confusing anyone. Glad to see it helped someone else out.

Honestly, the best guide I've seen on the net so far.

Deserves a sticky. The rest of those honestly deserve to be taken down.. or consolidated into one so that theres something for Pentium users.

L33tJarads is outdated, and needs replaced or updated. Theres not enough about A64s in there, which everyone is using.



Any more suggestions on my OC? My bios only seems to allow for a 1.55v core setting.. must be the 1004 beta bios?

The guy from AT was able to set his board (same one) at 1.625v.. I'd like to stay under 1.6v personally, but I'd do it and monitor the temps.


At 1.5v, 2.5ghz I'm idling at 44C. Which is surprising, must be the 90nm.

I guess I need to figure out how to properly setup my RAM in the bios..

You should point the mods to this threads direction, really though... it doesnt matter what someone thinks who already knows about this stuff. From a needy noobish perspective, your guide answers the right questions the right way.

The others blather on too much.
I think all that really needs to be done to prove yours is better is the proof: guys like me are saying it is.. and if more compared the two, I think they'd agree hands down.

Like I said, the other one is simply outdated, not enough info on A64s/HT multi/HTT.

I cant seem to get it past 2.5ghz. For one, the bios limits the core volt to 1.55.. the AI Boost app says it allows 1.65 but it wont actually set it there..

I tried 3 the 1003 bios and the 1004 beta bios and both seem to only support 1.55v...

any ideas? I've seen people with 1.625 on a A8N before.. this guy for instance

Any ideas? I havent messed with the RAM settings at all because I cant get it a bit over 250 CPU frequency.. and I dont think I'm limited there yet.

I think this CPU could use 1.625v and I'll stick wtih whatever I get from that.
