Alright here's my dilemma. In the next two months I've got it setup so that I can be putting a little money away, paying my parents (still live at home), and still have enough dough to make ONE major purchase between now and May. And my choices are:

1 - NEC MultiSync 1760NX-BK

OR

2 - Klipsch Promedia Ultra 5.1

This is an especially tough choice because I don't really NEED either of them. My Samsung 763MB 17" CRT is still working fine, but I've been wanting an LCD (this exact one) for a long time. It's the same thing with my Logitech Z-560 speakers. They are still working great and I like them but I really want 5.1 and I've been drooling over the Klipsch for awhile.....I figure if I'm gonna get speakers beyond what I've got, then I might as well get the best.

What do you guys think? Neither of these are gonna have any effect on the rest of the system but I'm craving both a bigger/better screen AND high end speakers.....what should I do???

I'll eventually end up having both of them but this is more of a "which one should I get first" question. Thanks for any input, it's greatly appreciated.

Get the monitor. It's more of an upgrade from your existing monitor, than the seaker upgrade.

Well my friend,
The upgrade from 4.1 to 5.1 would be great although, LCDs aren't great for gaming. Honestly, any one would be great. Since you've told me that you do alot of work. I don't have a suggestion, as one example which I have shown and the other, which you like listening to music on your PC. Honestly, it comes down to what you want. This nobody can give actual advice on.

well we have the klipsch at work and my god they sound amazing, but make sure you have the right connections for it, if your looking to play games and high graphical stuff, LCD wouldn't be too great of a choice, kinda gets mushy when u have close details

monitor, as u grow older u prolly wont game as much so that would mean u have a nice LCD that is space saving :D

I'll be getting them both EVENTUALLY.....so I'll have the LCD before I'm old. ;)

Get the monitor. But those Klipsch are fine..this is a 'tuff choice

Nah.....really???

I'd get the LCD...

True, but I listen to music more then anything else on my computer. When I'm not listening to music I'd say I use my computer for about 15% games and 85% surfing the net, forum posting, and Maya/Photoshop. So you see, either one would benefit me hugely.

I think I may have actually come to a semi-conclusion here though, after sitting and thinking logically for more then two seconds. ;)

At the end of the month I'll have $900 to work with after deductions. $240 is going to my parents, and $60 is being put away. That leaves me with $600.....not quite enough for the LCD. However, after selling my speakers I'll be up to $750.....and I'll have enough for the Klipsch!!! :D

You might say, "just sell the 560's and get the LCD" but then I'm left with nothing but my craptastic headphones for another month.....no good. ;)

I'd still appreciate any kind of input or feedback on this 'cus who knows.....if I put togethor enough computers for ppl this month I might have enough to get either one. Then I'll REALLY be screwed. ;) :p

Go for the LCD and set up your system with dual displays. IMHO, that would enhance your pc use the most.

those klipsch 5.1 are only 399 at bestbuy

I realise this.....but I live in Saskatchewan, Canada and there's a VERY small number of places that sell Klipsch. I'm gonna be getting them off NCIX for $650 + tax when the time comes. I realise that it's WAY overpriced but there's nobody else that has them.....I think it just must be really hard/expensive for ppl to get them in, seeing as they're primarily sold in the states.

Believe me, If I could get away with only paying $399 USD ($530 CDN) I would. :p

i didn't realize you were in canada..... that sucks they over price stuff so much

how far are you away from the boreder?

A fair distance.....too far to justify driving south to buy a set of speakers. ;) Lets just say that after you factor in gas to get down there and back I wouldn't really be saving anything.....and it'd be MUCH easier to have THEM come to MY door. :D

They dont' ship to Canada, that's the problem.

I was just talking to one of my friends and he said he'd buy my CRT for $150 so here we go..........now I've got enough to go either way. :(

Thing is that he also had a little bit of "info" for me. He said that he used to sell speakers and he had WAY more Klipsch returns then Logitech, and he was sayin' that the Klipsch get kinda crackly at low volume. I don't know if I should even listen to him though 'cus he was talking about older stuff and not specifically about the Promedia Ultras I'm looking at. What's more is that I've NEVER heard or seen anyone complaining about them in that respect.....and you'd think it'd come up SOMEWHERE.

Until I get someone to "back up" what he's saying I'm gonna stick with the Promedia Ultra 5.1's for now, even though we WOULD buy my monitor. ;) :D

never crackly at low volume unless you have it at butt crack low and it only goes to the front speakers, but that is at like level two, thats because there isn't enoguh power to go through all the speakers, other than that if you are listening at a moderat level, like low you'll be ok, high, sounds amazing, the logitech sound artificial and crappy in my opinion, i have the promedia 2.1 klipsch i wouldn't trade them for anything...heh... expect the 5.1's

I'm guessing I'd be getting roughly the same "kind" of sound out of the Z-680's as I already am from my Z-560's??? I am happy with my 560's, but that's because I was coming from a set of 4.1 Creative Inspires. ;)

Problem is that I've never HEARD the Promedia Ultra 5.1's and so I can't really do a direct comparison for MYSELF.....all I can do is base my judgement on what everyone else tells me. Even though the general concensous is that the Klipsch are bar-none the best.....i still can't hear them ahead of time.....which kind of irritates me.

One other thing I've never really heard brought up that much is the fact that apparently Logitech doesn't use quality parts throughout their boxes. Oh, and there's the irritating hissing that comes through my Z-560's when there's no sound coming through.....which is something that EVERYONE gets. It seems that there's FAR more negative points about the Logitech's then there are about the Klipsch. what bad have I heard about the Promedias'??? Oh, lets see..."it doesn't come with a wireless remote"..........Boo Frickety Hoo.

Just be reading this off Klipsch's site:

With an enclosure that is 20 percent larger, the ProMedia™ Ultra 5.1 subwoofer incorporates a series of refinements designed to increase efficiency for more total output, lower distortion and deepen bass extension. These improvements include a lower tuning frequency, a voice coil that is 60 percent longer and a larger, slotted port. The subwoofer is a bass-reflex type with dual 8-inch side-firing woofers and convex driver dust caps for unsurpassed high output linear bass response. The 500-watt BASH® amplifier and Klipsch engineering offer high output with low distortion and effortless dynamic headroom.

The updated, two-way Ultra 5.1 satellite speakers and mid-bass drivers sport a sleeker appearance with a refined floating grille and under cone termination, which hides the speaker leads for a cleaner cone appearance. The satellites also feature an updated crossover network that enhances the higher frequencies and delivers richer tones. As with the ProMedia™ 5.1 satellite speakers, the Ultra 5.1 satellites include exclusive Klipsch MicroTractrix™ Horn tweeters that cleanly and accurately handle the high frequencies. Each satellite features a redesigned self-supporting pedestal.

The magnetically shielded center channel also features under cone termination uses the same Klipsch MicroTractrix™ Horn tweeter and three-inch fiber-composite cone woofer as each satellite speaker, ensuring an ideal blend and seamless driver transition.

The user-friendly control module features separate main, center, rear and subwoofer controls as well as a digital LED volume level display and an on/off or headphone listening mode switch. Unlike the original ProMedia 5.1, the Ultra module features all controls on the front panel. It also has two stereo miniplug jacks, one for headphone output and one for the convenient connection of portable audio devices and any other alternative source that uses a stereo miniplug output.

It really sounds like they know what they're doing.

Let's look at the history here.....Klipsch is a well-known name that actually makes home theatre shit. Where does Logitech have to come from??? Mice and Keyboards??? Hardly impressive if you ask me.

Alright, now I'm just getting mean. :D

I've been doing a lot more thinking and planning and I think that I might be able to "hold out" with my Z-560's for awhile longer yet. I'm gonna be moving around things in my room and making my speakers into an actual surround setup and locating the sub a lot better so it reverberates a lot more and i can hear it more.

I guess that If I go with either of them in the next month and a half it'll be the LCD just 'cus I think I'll be a lot happier with my speakers once they're setup properly.....and that's the main problem with them right now. I have to have the rears on teh floor and even after balancing and calibration.....it sound slike I've only got a 2.1 setup. Once I get the rears behind me and spread out I think I'll be much more content.

I'll hopefully have some updates fairly soon.....'cus I'm probly gonna start on this pretty quick. :D

Alright, I'm definitely not getting the Klipsch. Now that I've got my Logitech Z-560's setup properly I can't believe it!!!! Fricken awsome. :D

It helps that I've got the sub in an open cabinet/drawer type thing.....to reverberate the bass out into the room, now that it's BEHIND me I can actually feel every last little "thump" and I can't believe I ever did without it.

Thank you everyone for your input on this, looks like I'll probly be going with the LCD after all.....this is just too cool. :D
