I just got the Palit 580 3GB version and put them in SLI on the UD3R Rev 2.0 motherboard from Gigabyte.

The mother board has 2 16x slots next to eachother and the third is a 8x slot.
Also my mid tower has horrible cooling.

in Surround gaming the GPU at the top hits 93C when its laying flat and i have a fast fan hitting it from the top with the case open.

Before it was hitting 100C....

I think I should get a new case and motherboard. A motherboard with 3 x16 slots so i can have a nice space between them....

What do you guys think I should do. Suggest cases and mobos please. thanks

just get a new case, one with the side fans, 120mm are good what kind of price are you wanting to see?

A new case with a side panel fan would work best IMO. What's your budget?

Yea but I tried hitting the cards on the side with a really powerful panaflo fan i had left over... it still crashed when reaching 94C

I think I need a mobo to seperate them form eachother. give it breathing room. and I know its not the card itself because IM running it right now and it hits 60 C on starcraft 2

Many many people have cards hugging each other, as I do. The motherboard isn't the problem, unless there's another issue going on.

The coolers on the Palit cards are not such that they should choke the card above it, In fact there are cut outs on the bottom of the left fan and top of the right fan to suck air in from the side of the fans where they pull air. See Below

I honestly don't think that you'll get much of a improvement by going with a new motherboard. However for shits and giggles, go ahead and put the second card in the x8 slot and run them like that for a run through some benchmarks and report back with the temps. I think the main thing here is either your case or case fans. Believe it or not you may not need a new case but you might just need to clean out the dust from your case and replace your fans with better quality ones. I use cooler master. Their Fans have amazing CFM ratings all while remaining unbelievably quiet. How many fans does your case have? Where are they located exactly? What kind of fans are they?

Agreed, but i was emphasizing the other people part. tri and quad setups can run on one mobo, I'll bet anything his problem is cooling/airflow related.

LOL. I just made the same post just now :S

I'm using a HAF-X with 1 200mm intake side fan, and a 120mm fan pushing air to the front of the cards. I have another 140mm front intake fan, two 200mm top exhaust fan and one 120mm rear exhaust fan.

I have as much air going through this thing as I can get, and these are the best temps that I can get running the cards side by side.

Hmm I didn't realize the forum made your case a hyperlink I could click. Your case only has 1 120mm fan in the front bottom and one in the back top. You need a new case. See how much you bennefit by trying the cards in the top 16x slot and bottom 8x slot and if it's as little of an improvement as I suspect, keep your motherboard and go all out on a great case $150 or more. Get one with a huge exhaust fan at the top along with excellent cfm rated fans on the front back and side panel. I use a Antec 902 case and it's fan setup and positioning is excellent however there are several better cases too.

Boggins those arent too bad, play with your fan speed settings. gpu1 hit 84% fan speed so it felt 86 degrees was good enough.

OP what are your fan speed settings?

i tried playing crysis with just one gtx 580 it went to 73C max and it crashed the gpu usage went to 0 and the screen went off and on and nothing.........either i got a bad one or its the gpu problem

I'm guessing if you get a Antec 300 you would use the side fan to blow external air on the cards ? I have the same MOBO and a Antec300. Been thinking of getting another 460 Card. I could see where heat would be an issue. It doesn't hardly look like they would even fit beside each other.

Now i know why watercooling is so big. it makes gfx card work at optimum speeds with great temps something thats a pain to control with air flow

Ya. I have the Corsair Closed System H50 for my processor but was too afraid to try the big boy water cooling for the Vid Card.

My GTX 580's SLI'ed hit around 70C, and I'm using Gigabyte's 3x windforce cooling. I suggest you get a better case with better airflow, like Coolermaster's HAF X or 932.

decided to return all this crap. i dont like eyefinity. Gonna wait for quarter 2 2012 to build a brand new pc with the new stuff lol 580 wasn't mind blowing over my 280 at eyefinity level so wasn't worth it

at eyefinity level... huh? thats ATI tech nvidia uses surround and the 580 should be significantly faster at higher res, it has 3gb of v ram.

it was getting about 40-45 fps on hardcore settings in surround .. but they were over heating. also If i kept it Id have to go to nvidia settings and switch to surround mode to game in surround then when im out of the game I have to switch to seperate screens so I can max my windows on each monitor. Id also have to spend another 600 for a new mobo with 3 x16 slots to haev a space between them and get a new case. I rather spend all that money on the new tech coming otu next year so ill just wait

the perphreial vision wasn't that great either. I can't ignore the bezels and the side monitors I knew would be stretched out and that made it even less appealing in real life. I think the best thing to do is play 3d 1 monitor like I can do now even with my gtx 280. Or get a projector to avoid crosstalk. im happy with my current step simple 1 monitor that does 3d and has 120hz for starcraft 2 gaming. surround kinda of sucks. 30" is better then surround

You may also have to use MSI Afterburner to control your video card fan speeds. That's what I have to do on my dual GTX 580 setup.

Ever tried the paper trick, that is if they are still beside each other? I did this with my 280's SLI and my 2nd card had about a 10C drop immediately.

Get piece of paper, fold it to make a small square, wedge it between the cards in the right corner closest to you (assuming you are looking either straight down or straight at the opened case)

It's not pretty but it's simple, works and no duct tape :D

I had a similar problem. My top 580 was hitting 97 degrees C when playing BC2. In a HAF932 Case. I dropped the second card down to the bottom X8 slot and now both cards never top 75C. Also dropping the card to the X8 slot did not drop performance noticeably at all. And even if it did drop 2 or 3 percent that was easily made up by increased OC potential with lower temps.

Sandwiched together i didn't really have any OC headroom due to temps. Taking the bottom card down to the bottom slot, i was then able to OC to 900 on the core. Can probably take it further because the temps are still good.

What you could do is make a shroud out of cardboard or something (legit people that have alot of free time do it with plexi).

What that will do is it will section off your cards from the rest of the case. Then you just put that Panaflo or any 60+ cfm fan at the right side to blow air through the cards then out the back of the case.

I will take some pics of my jimmyrigged contraption tonight when i get home from work.

Unfortunately, dropping the card in the only other free spot for the second card won't work. The only other slot where that will work is the last slot, and there are too many cable headers getting in the way so you can't seat the card down all the way into the slot. For that motherboard you must go side by side, unless you remove the coolers and watercool.

I'm trying to RMA the MSI X-Power, and hopefully MSI will give me back a motherboard that isn't broken.

What motherboard do you recommend... needs ot use the i7 920 and 1333mhz 6gb memory I have triple channel. also I i have a C300 ssd........ I think im going for the HAF X What else do i neeD?

when I put those two alienware monitors back in the case. I couldn't wait to get htem out. I can't live without tripple monitors now... I like having multiple screens even thought Im not fond of surround I dont need to use surround. Just use the monitors :)
