Help me fold on campus network

My dorm room only allows one computer for each person in the room, and we use the cisco NAC and all that crap, how would i be able to add a simple folding box? i was thinking internet connection sharing through my laptop might work? does anyone have this problem?

i know this stuff is not allowed to be talked about but it is not for pirating or anything bad, we all know it is for a righteous cause!
 
I'd personally recommend a router that has wireless. It would work perfectly because you could wire in all the computers you want, and do your laptop wireless. I've had good luck with my US Robotics USR 5461 after adding a heatsink to the main chip to keep it from overheating. I can't believe it didn't come with one stock. It would actually start slowing down on torrents because the chip would be hot enough to burn the s@$^$ out of you.

yeah i know all that, I am a not a networking noob, its also what i am going to school for lol, I have my DIR-655 sitting here, i took it to school with me just because it's awesome and maybe would come in handy in an event like this?

But i read at various other places that they can do network scans and figure out if you have a router attached to the network and i am not sure how i could circumvent the NAC, I think i can only have one computer connected at the same time so something like ICS would be my best bet?
 
You could use ICS but personally i'd just hook up a SoHo router and if they knock on your door about it just claim ignorance.
 
The problem with a router is that the MAC is easily identified as a Linksys, Netgear, Cisco, etc. If the NAC is worth a damn your port will be logged as soon as you turn the router on.

ICS is a better bet.

Could he not clone his MAC from the PC to the router?

 
Yep those Cisco NACs will sniff out any rogue APs. It wont take them long to find you and many schools have policies against this. Many schools will take away your internet privileges for a while just for having a router on their network, whether you claim ignorance or not. That plus you could mess up their network with things like DHCP, etc. I would recommend against this.

2 NICs, a small switch, and ICS might be worth a shot, athough i wouldnt put it past Ciscos NAC to detect that as well. Is there wireless access in your dorm?

Yes i have wireless connection in my room, im confused how it works, if i have my laptop running normally on wired connection i can still use the wireless on my iPhone?

maybe i should try a wireless nic in my folding machine?
 
If that's the case, I'd set up a Smoothwall box. It doesn't even take much of a computer to run it perfectly. www.smoothwall.org . It will see it as a nic card, and should detect what it can do. Then you can plug anything you want into it. That's what I run my home network off of. I even route my wireless through it. I don't have to run security because even if they get on, they won't get out unless I approve them on my smoothwall box.
 
Don't most schools allow you to use a network SWITCH (not a router)...? This doesn't fuck with their DNS setup.

And, you can get around Cisco CA without too much trouble, as a good friend just PM'd me about :D

Bingo. If you have wireless access in your dorm then a wireless NIC in the folding rig would work. Except for maybe a SMP client. Someone correct me if Im wrong but IIRC those require a constant connection.

If your schools allows just a switch this would indeed be the best solution. Most schools do allow this. A 5 or 8 port Ethernet switch is pretty cheap.

Just run the Linux SMP client inside a VM.
That way it works on an internal network connection, not the external Wireless connection.
Problem solved and you may also get more PpD running that way.

Just run a switch thats all I ever did. Same Cisco software "clean access" register it in your room under your name, as far as they can tell your just unplugging one and plugging the other in-really fast.
