rig:

everything is at stock

q6600 with xigmatek 1280 cpu cooler.
780i w/ current bios
4gb of ddr-800 gskill
200gb ide hdd
8800gtx 768mb oc2 x2 not in sli YET

what i'm looking for is a gpu cooler for my 8800gtx oc2. i'm trying to run sli and also have at least 2 pci ports left for my wireless card and my audio card

what would you suggest?

battleaxe can't fit and someone mentioned to me a scythe musashi cooler.

of course i need a flexible sli bridge but thats something i can find. suggestions are a big help thank you to those who read and reply

Which 780i board exactly. It's hard to figure out what you need without the exact board layout.

If you need both pci slots, all I can suggest is water cooling. With your board, I can't think of anything else.

Whats the reason for needing aftermarket HS's? To loud? Want better temps? Why not sell both the cards on ebay (they go for what? 100 bucks still?) and use the money you were going to spend on two HS's (most are in the 40+ range each) and buy a nice single card setup? As you should have close to $280 for a card. That way you save allot of room, your not blocking slots, not having to mess with SLI or crossfire and have better upgrade room in the future.

i just want better temps and be able to use my pci slots for sound card and my wireless pci card. but how can i run sli if those ports are going to be blocked.

anyone suggest me another board where the layout isn't so messed up. i tried finding a gigabyte board on this forum but no luck on finding a ud3p or ud3r so forth.

i do have a pci-e sound card. auzentech 7.1 i fergot what it was. not forte forsure tho

i think of pickin up a p35 lp t2r. think that is a better option for me?
I wouldn't go with that board in general, and it also does not support SLI. Like I said, to run SLI with an LGA775 system, you NEED an nVidia chipset board.

If you want help list exactly what you have. The list in the first post says you need two(2) pci ports for wireless and audio card. Now you say your sound card is pci-e. Name and model link would be better.

i haven't gotten a pci card for my wireless internet yet but supposedly a dlink or even netgear would work. tried finding one for 25 dollars but its ok i don't have to worry about that now. last thing i'd buy on my list.

auzentech prelude 7.1. its going to use the full pci-e slot theres no point in posting this but just letting you know what card i have.

The AuzenTech Prelude is a pci card. : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829156005

Get a usb wireless adapter and your problem is solved.

sorry explosion cinema. its still a pci card that needs a full slot.

i saw rampage for 150 and a 790i for 150 also. why not go sli?

It's not about why shouldn't you go SLI, it's just that there are single cards out there that will perform the same as them in SLI, your talking right now about spending 150 bucks on a new mobo just so you can spend more on HS's for your cards, that alone would be 230 bucks, sell the two cards you have and your looking at another 200 to put towards a single card, which comes to about 430 you could put to a single card, hell, for that kind of money you could get a GTX 285 and an aftermarket cooler for it. Getting off your cards now will also give you upgrade room in time to come, as you can always SLI the 285 or whatever you get. Or, you could leave the cards as is, since I am sure they are still running within thermal specs and save your self a pocket full of money.

And if your having trouble because of the cards blocking a PCI slot you could always get a flexible PCI riser and remote mount one of the cards else where.

i'm not really into gaming but i sorta do want to cope diablo 3 when it comes out and play some dota on some good fps. i want to use this rig as my programming and media rig, also encoding movies and whatnot.

what do you suggest i get in order to continue on? i probably wont hit i7 for another year or so cause i'm a college student who doesn't even have a job and trying to pick his way through life.

thanks

i heard 250's are on par with 8800. 260's are on par with 9800gtx. 285's are 9800gtx x2 or hd4870x2.

imma be a single slot person i guess. i just dont want to bust a lot of money for something that is on par with something old.

Ain't 9800gtx a bit refurbished 8800gtx? I'd wage that 8800gtx is still stronger then 250 :)

I'd suggest 275gtx, it OCs well, and you can get her to speeds of 285, but if you on budget, that pair of 260 core 216 will do fine :)

no the 9800GTX is a updated version of the 8800GTS g92.. with better vram modules.. the 8800GTX is better then a stock 9800GTX but overclocked the 9800GTX is a little better depending on the game.. if its a game that requires a lot of vram usage the 8800GTX with its 384bit 768mb vram is better then the 9800GTX with its 256bit 512mb/1GB vram.. but if its a game that requires more gpu performance then the 9800GTX is better..

the gts 250 is a 9800GTX+ which has the 55nm gpu instead of the 65nm g92 that the 9800GTX has.. clock for clock the performance is identical between the 9800GTX and 9800GTX+.. but the GTX+ gpu overclocks way better..

killerb33 you need to do a little more research.. because what ever you are reading is completely wrong.. the gtx 260 is insanely better then the 9800GTX/GTX+.. the 9800GX2 is onpar with the GTX275 and the GTX285 just smokes all of them.. the HD4870x2 is better then all the cards i just named.. the gtx295 and hd4870x2 are both within a few FPS of each other on every game..

basicly goes in this order for single card performance.. 8800GT/9800GT, 8800GTS, 9800GTX, 8800GTX, 9800GTX+(gts 250), HD4850, GTX 260, HD4870, GTX 275, GTX 280, HD4890, GTX285, HD4870x2, GTX 295

yeah yeah thats what i was trying to say. but imma go with a single card but i dont game very much although i just want to be able to play diablo 3 when it coems out and DOTA from WC3 TFT. thats all i'm trying to say.

what i'm trying to build is for my programming, encoding, extensive browsing, a gaming from time to time.

should i just get a hd 4870 or should i get GTX-2##?

i also need to find a motherboard and i haven't gotten any good responses from anyone. tried local with a p5q3 delux.

A 4870 would be cheaper and would be enough for your needs.

Post a budget and we'll help you with that. Also post what CPU you'll be using, what RAM, and what PSU. It's impossible to help you if you don't give more information.

its on the first page zero.

do you think that diablo 3 will use dx11 or still dx 10.1. i want to play that game with no FPS lag and i have a 20inch envision screen with max reso at 1650x1050. dont think imma get a new monitor anytime soon.

my budget. right now all i have is 250. trying to get rid of stuff locally just my old stuff like abit a9wd-max. p35 neo2-fr from msi.

i'm very flexible at the moment trying to figure out what i need to get and get it asap before school starts.

what i need:

board.
graphics

You didn't post your PSU.

Diablo 3 will not be DX11, and a single 4870 should be plenty to max it out.

$250 for both? In that case, I would recommend these:
Gigabyte GA-EP45-UD3R: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128359
Powercolor 4870 512MB: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814131140

psu is 850tx from corsair

i tried finding a ud3p on the forums but i found nothing so i will continue to search or just eventually buy retail.

4870 i will look for but i rather go with nvidia at this moment

since its a 20" display.. GTS 250 1GB or 4850 are your best choices in my opinion.. anything else would be overkill..

does it have to be a 1gb?

1gb would be a good idea and the price difference over a 512 card is usually pretty small. also dota runs fine on laptops with integrated video so not sure why you are concerned with performance of an old game like that right now. diablo 3 performance is anyone's guess at this point. I highly suspect the card mentioned already will run it fine simply because its not eactly looking like a technical marvel...

Yeah, Diablo 3 will probably run well on stuff going back to the 7000 series from NV.

i have too many leftover stuff and i dont want it anymore they need to go in order to get funds for a new board and gpu. SIGH but thanks for the inputs guys greatly appreciated. if you have any other ideas feel free to post.

diablo 3 and starcraft 2 when will they ever frick release it OMG its been 2 years since they said they were going to release it.

I would go with a GTX260 or a 4870 to have a bit more longevity. And there is no 512MB GTX260; they all have 896MB of RAM.

oh i see. doesn't matter about memory then if i get one of those. any specific actual ones that i should be looking for cause i don't think imma ever go SLI anytime soon.

like a ssc version or something or a specific core?

Biggest consideration really would be the brand you purchase, because most video cards are only meaningfully differentiated by their warranty service and customer support. EVGA, BFG, XFX would be good Nvidia choices and XFX is really the only reputable ATI retailer I know of. You do pay a premium for the warranty (esp. in the case of XFX ATI) but the choice is yours.

Secondary consideration would be cooling. If you're not bothered by noise the stock cooling will be fine even with a minor overclock. Investing in a quality aftermarket cooler will bring both lower noise and better cooling if you'd like to OC more.

Also, things like bundled games/MIRs are good to pay attention to as well.
