Well I think it is time to upgrade. I have been using ATI cards for quite some time now, ever since mx420. I was thinking of getting a x1800xl, but I see that 7800gt outperfoms it alot of the time. Besides the HDR+AA what features does x1800xl have to make it "better" than 7800gt? My budget is $600 (I also need to buy a mobo). Iwas looking on the egg and I can get 7800gtx for $450, should I just go with 7800gtx? My main question is: Why should I pay almoust $100 more for x1800xl? If most benchmarks show that 7800gt/gtx will outperform it, does it has some features that 7800 doesn't?

Check out the reviews on [H]ard|OCP. It does have features like FP16/32 HDR with AA, but IMO the card may not be powerful enough to do that. In addition it uses Adaptive AA instead of TR MSAA or TR SSAA. Also the AF and overall IQ is better with the ATi card. From what I've seen though is that the nVidia cards are just plain faster. This will probably give you better framerates at a better price. I'd say because they are faster if you are really picky with IQ then get a x1800xl.

Doesn't teh x1800xl have better memory controller? I need something that will last me a while , I want to play new games on max or high on 1280x1024.

The memory controller doesn't matter if it doesn't change anything in performance.

Either an X1800XL or 7800GT would be great for the resolution you mentioned.

If it were my money, I'd go with the 7800GT. Save 50-100 bucks and get more RAM (unless you already have 2GB), games are using more and more of that all time.

So go with a single 7800GT and an SLI motherboard now, and when the GT starts to get a bit slow (and cheaper) pick up another one.
