Frys has the E4300 in stock for $170.00. I've heard that this is a nice overclocker and doesn't require expensive RAM and motherboard to reach decent speeds.

However, Frys also has a deal going now for an E6300 with an ECS motherboard ( http://www.netaffilia.com/ad/electronics/frys/i/2007/01/19/22544.html ) for $169.00.
I'm sure the board is crap but that's a decent price for the chip.

Given that I will overclock these chips and that I have a limited budget, which of these should I go for? If I end up w/the E4300 can you recommend a motherboard that provides bang for the buck?

Thanks!

The motherbord in that combo is crap. (IMO)
Since you are on a budget, and sounds like you wanna do some OCing, I'd recommend the E4300. Then just get a nice motherboard that's over clocking friendly

Tough call...

If you were getting some good ram I would opt for the E6300 instead and sell the board since E6300 does perform better than E4300...

Thanks for the replies guys. The problem with "good" RAM is that it's damn expensive! I could do some decent overclocking w/the E4300 w/just middle of the road RAM eh? What specs should I look for in RAM for the E4300?

You simply cannot skimp on ram, especially when overclocking. It will make or break your stability.

Yeah, I definitely don't want cheap RAM. However, don't you need really *nice* RAM to get good overclocks on the E6300? and merely *good* RAM on the E4300?

all you really need is DDR2-800 with a E6300 and it's only few $$ difference between DDR2-667 or 533... Shoot I have E6300 with DDR2-667 and flying at 3.0ghz... E4300 perform worse than E6300 at stock and overclocked too... So that 3.3ghz E4300 might be the same performance as E6300 @ 3.0ghz...
