mmmm...the x800xtpe might be slightly faster like +-5% but the x1600 is just so much newer and has SM3.0 support with the X1000 series ring-bus memory controller etc...
IMO its not worth it to inevst in an X800 series at this point
I vote for the X1600XT PE 90nm and should overclock well and make up the difference plus better iq Shader model 3.0, ring bus memory controller, avivo, see where I'm going with this
I would go with the X800XTPE. I will take 256-bit memory over SM 3.0. I don't think the performance is there with th X1600 to even use SM 3.0, but I don't know for sure.
I installed a x1600pro 256gddr3 in a friends computer he is playing oblivion with "High" settings with cat6.3 running comlpetly stock on a crappy compac amd socket a maby 2.0ghz. He did pul some sliders down to get a better fps range 15-30 with HDR and no AA 4xAF.
With sufficient tweaking, I'm running an X1600XT in 'Oblivion' with 4xAA and HDR (thanks to driver update) at 800x600. 4xAA and 800x600 looks a LOT better than 0xAA and 1280x1024. Performs a LOT better, too. And HDR is just gorgeous, which the X800s can't do.
I had an X800XT, I sold it and bought an X1600XT for 'Oblivion'. If you don't see much difference with HDR, a setting must be borked somewhere somewhere and it isn't really on. It makes a HUGE difference in quality.
Oh, and it has nothing to do with SM2.0 vs SM3.0, either. Turns out, 'Oblivion' doesn't have the SM3.0 code path enabled yet. All effects are done in SM2.0. To do 'Oblivion's HDR, however, you need FP16 blending - which the X800-series can't do.
Sure it makes a slight difference why would you want to play with low detail? Detail makes much more difference than HDR.
People eat up this techno garbage too much I think... SM 3.0 is pointless if you don't have the power to push it. WHich 1600xt definitely lacks the power.
