hi all

a friend just gave me this CPU -- its ovbiously an Intel Xeon processor. I've never had one of these and I know its retarded but i just wanna confirm it's specs.

On the bottom (pin side) of the chip it has:

2000MP/1ML3/400/1.475V
SL6YJ Costa Rica

now this means 2Ghz Multiprocessor Capable, 1MB of L3 cache and 400Mhz FSB right?

I figured these things would be worth an assload, but i just checked pricewatch and im a bit confused -- they have 2Ghz xeon's with only 512K of cache for ass cheap (like 90 bucks) and if my assumptions are correct on the spec codes thats not the same CPU.

I did scroll lower and find an exact match -- and the price was $1056!!!

Can you please help me clairify if i have a 90 dollar CPU in my hands or something that cost's 1 grand?

Thanks all
Jeff

thanks for the linkage man

now a question of it's worth?

is it like the 91$ cheapass Xeon, or is it worth a bit more then that?

I know it's kinda weird asking it's worth but I seriously need to know because ill be selling it, and IF its worth a bit more then 91$ I'd like to know that before i throw it out there

Thanks
Jeff

If that is indeed the SL6YJ then, yes that is a thousand dollar chip.

The MP's are capable in running in quad and larger servers. (DP's can only run in duals or less)

holy ass bombs!

I have a thousand dollar chip sitting in my hands right now!

Whoop! SELL SELL SELL!

Only problem is I don't think you'll be able to sell it for 1000$.

Brand new in the retail box, it sells for $1000 only because very few vendors still offer it (3 total between pricewatch and pricegrabber).

Even the fastest Xeon 3.6GHz sells for less than that (1MB L2, no L3). And the faster Xeon 2.8GHz w/1MB L3 sells for $219 on pricewatch: http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=X2.8D_1M&c=pw

The CPU is worth only a little more than you paid for it, maybe $150 if you find a sucker. :p

Yes and no, those Xeons you linked to are DP not MP, so they are only Dual capable.. the Processor he has will work in 8 processor motherboards, so it is worth more.

Still he probably will not be able to sell it for $1000.

Exactly. $1000 for a used Xeon isn't going to happen. Even if it is worth $1000. But it is an MP processor and not a DP. So you can't compare it evenly price wise. Few Xeon's work in more than 2 processor configurations.

It looks as it is worth 600 as that is what it was purchased for.

Truth, if you purchased it for $600, you're likely only going to get it for $600

Oops. Yeah, those Xeon MPs are worth a lot. I completely forgot about single/dual and MP versions. But it only supports 4-way according to here. :p

Look down on the page you linked and it states that it supports dual and up to 4 way.

I may be wrong but I believe it can be used in a dual setup.
