Ok, I purchased a hell of a deal today from a guy who needed cash fast. I recieve the following for $300 cash, so I had to jump right on it, now im trying to figure out the best possible system specs with the current config I have now, which I will explain in a bit.

These are the specs of the computer I just bought

Epox 8rda+ if someone can tell me if this is nforce 2
athlon xp 3200+ Barton 400mhz
1x Kingston Hyperx PC4000
Also came with the following but not concerned with because they will be replaced if need be
40gb hd
gf4 ti 4200

Now for the CURRENT setup I have/had before I bought this today

FIC AU13
2500+ Barton
2x Corsair XMS pc2700 512mb sticks running in dual channel

Now, my question is this, what should I use, because I am wondering if the slower DUAL channel is better than a single stick of pc4000, I am sure I am going to use the epox and the 3200+ together, but what do u guys think I should do, I want the best performance for gaming only, please dont overlook this post

(edited, forgot to put what size sticks on the xms ram)
 
welll how much ram did you get? You only said 1x.. 512? quite frankly i would use the kingston and try to overclokc the 3200+ more. I mean if you can get more OC out of it who cares about the ram dual/single.

thats me tho.. maybe theres some people who crave dual channel more than a better oc..
 
well i have heard that dual channel for AMD isnt all its cracked up to be, but i think i am more concerned with 1gb ram at 2700 speeds, or a stick of 512 pc4000, which I will be overclocking because this also came with a SLK-900
 
The primary benefit of dual channel in my experience (though it does give a minor performance boost always, and there's nothing wrong with that) is when using onboard nforce hardware, especially the sound.

Benchmarks with sound enabled + dual channel compared to benchmarks with sound enabled + single channel DO show a decent difference.

i will be using either an audigy or audigy 2, not sure yet, so should I just use the 3200+ with the pc4000 or the 2 sticks of 2700 as dual channel and just oc that ram to 200mhz fsb, I think it will do this, lmk
 
I just glanced at the specs, but looks like a nice board. I'm no expert on RAM, but seeing as you have three RAM slots, why not just use all 3 slots? you wont be in Dual channel(i've read that AMD + dual channel just isn't the shiznit like with intel), and the kingston will run slower, but you would have 1.5 GB of RAM? or am i just stupid on ram?
 
it will, but will also be running at 2700 instead of 3200, and the 3200+ wont run at its potential unless I oc the ram to 3200 speeds right?

Or you can use a divider to run the ram slower than the FSB. Might not be as good as running them 1:1, but I'd probably do it for 1.5 gigs. I'd go for it. Maybe.
 
not sure about this, and dont want to ruin anything, but do u guys think I should just keep the hyperx 4000 in and OC the heck out of it?
 
... since nobody has said it yet... DANG that was a great deal.

I'd OC the 3200+ ... OR if you want more RAM... put the 2700 ram in in, drop the ram:cpu ratio, and then OC.. ... then with the 4000 in the 2500+, you could OC it also... thus, swap ram, and OC both : )

In any case, your best option IMO is to put the larger amount of ram in the 3200+ and then OC as possible, if it gets an extra 100mhz out of the proc to do it, I'd drop the ram:cpu ratio to make it happen.

well until I do this I am trying to figure out the best possible config for the time being
