Hello everyone, I am going to build a little home file server that will be used mainly to download files and share them within my home network, it'll be used to store some media files as well. It is important to have a bittorrent client and a CIFS/SAMBA service to share data with Windows PCs.

These are the system's specs
Athlon 64 3800+ X2 2GHz
4*1GB DDR2
Intel Gigabit NIC
2*80GB Sata 1,5Gb/s hard drives (they'll be upgraded in a near future)

Now I have to choose the OS that best suits my needs, what would you suggest ? I am very excited about using ZFS as file system. I've tryed FreeNAS too, but I had some problems with it  (however its performance were very interesting), maybe it is better to use a general-purpose ZFS compatible OS, isn't it ? Which one would you choose ?

Or is better to use linux with software raid?

Thanks for the suggestion.

Bob

OmniOS+ Napit

or try our Nas4Free.

Nas4free would be simpler IMO. It's performance is decent on baremetal...

For general media storage and streaming a 1080p movie, your throughput would be fine in many cases if you have a 1gb network.

2x80gb sata drives is nothing special so I assume you don't have 1080p@30fps DTS movies that are taking up space of 10-40gb anyway...

Install the os on a 16gb flash drive picked up at walmart for $30.00

Hi Chandler,

I will try OmniOS, I've downloaded OpenIndiana too. At the moment I use the server to download files, then I copy them on my main system's 1TB HDD.
If I find the best OS, maybe I'll use the server to store, download and share data...in that case I'll of course upgrade the disks.
