my current system is in my sig, and im wondering what i should upgrade on it. should i upgrade the cpu to 64 bit? or should i get the x800xt and leave the proc?
 
If you're gaming, I think right now the thing that's hurting you most is that Radeon 7000. It's about time to retire that fossil.

I'd say a 6800 GT or X800 XT.
 
i was thinking of upgrading to an athlon 64 and a 9800 pro, but the 9800 pro will be outdated soon and i heard in like 6-8 months the current athlon 64s will be shit. is that true?
 
That's the constant battle you face when keeping a system up to date. You can spend a ton of money and get the best right when it arrives, or you want wait until it becomes affordable and suffer with what you have, or you can keep waiting for the next thing.

It all comes down to how much you're willing to spend for a given performance boost at a given time.

That said, you need a new video card more than anything else.
 
definitely get a new video card before you worry about the processor... i have that card and its pretty good but only for general usage
 
ok thanks guys, once i save up a little more cash ill go get the x800xt. are there any stores that sell the backpack edition yet?

video cards come with a backpack?
 
theres a special edition of the x800xt that comes with a backpack and a game. newegg has them, but theyre out of stock link

I'm not entirely convinced that ATI has the top of the line stuff for this round of chips. Their cards don't do OpenGL very well (Doom 3) and have no support for PS 3.0 (Farcry).

If your going to game and plan on upgrading to a better cpu/mobo at a later date, get the 6800.

However, this card will be extremely bottlenecked by your current hardware config so don't expect to ever be able to use it to its full potential.

I would say to max out this box first. Get a 9800 pro and enjoy. Then, when your ready, sell this box to a friend and build a new one from scratch with that 6800 and a a64/nforce4 MB.
