Help me choose an LCD.

I know this subject has been beaten to death but I need help.

I just bought a Samsung 977DF which I am very unhappy with, so I have decided it may be time to bite the bullet and get an LCD. I would like to spend no more than $400. My preferred resolution is 1280x1024 and it has to play games well. I have no problem getting either a 17" or 19" monitor.

I have narrowed my choices to these (but feel free to suggest others):


17"

Samsung 172x Silver 17" 12ms LCD Monitor (right now there are $150 dollars in rebates on this one) - $220ish after rebates

Viewsonic VP171B-2 17" 8ms LCD Monitor - $335


19"

Hyundai ImageQuest L90D+ 19in Multiscanning 8ms LCD Monitor - $369

Dell UltraSharp 1905FP 19-inch 20ms?? Monitor - $299

Samsung 930B 19-inch 8ms Monitor - $399 (after $70 rebate)
 
The L900+ is best for gaming. The 1905FP is not a good choice for a hardcore gamer because of its slow response time. Games will ghost on this monitor, sometimes, pretty bad. However, for other things, even watching DVDs, the dell is far superior in its image quality to those others, since it uses a more robust PVA panel instead of a TN+. The TN is much faster for gaming, but the TN panels have more washed out colors and a limited viewing angle than the PVA type panels.

I'll sell you my dell :p
 
well I just bought the 172x and it was awesome for the half day it worked :(
 
I tried the 997DF and wasn't real satisfied with it. so i returned it and got the L90D+ and it's been great. there's a catch to it's greatness and i'll see if i can phrase this correctly. This monitor is awesome in games, but only get it if you can get used to the minor problems it has with everything else.

I don't like my 997DF at all. I hope I can return it without getting hit with the restocking fee.
 
I have heard mostly good things about the L90D+. In fact I almost bought this monitor.
However, I believe the contention that

is certainly up for debate. I have seen a couple of reviews on the L90D+ including the Tom's Hardware Guide one that gave it editor's choice status above 2 other models, (albeit it was a very small field).

But I have yet to see it compared to the new Samsung 930B which I believe is its strongest competition to date. The new Sammy adds DVI input and 6 cutomizable brightness/contrast presets that can be cycled thru very easily (text, internet, games, movies, sports, custom). I would love to see a review that includes both of these monitors. If anyone has found one please let me know.

I have had the 930B for about 2 weeks now and am really enjoying it. You can do a search on this forum, overclockers forum, and anandtech's forums for multiple threads on both monitors and a small review I wrote on the 930B if you are interested. I would be happy to answer any questions you may have about the 930B and I know there are several happy L90D+ owners in here that could answer questions for you on that model as well.

Could you please elaborate briefly on the L90D+ "minor problems with everything else" that you are referring to? Thanks.
 
IS the Samsung 915N not in the short list because it's analog or does it suffer another problem?
It is also 19" with an 8ms response time .. and most of the specs are the same as the 930B.
 
The problem for me with the 915N was just that. It has analog inputs only. Although a good friend of mine has one and he likes it. I wanted the DVI connectability though - it was a deal breaker for me. Also the 930B has 6 customizable contrast/brightness settings. I believe the 915N has 4? 930B has MagicTune software. This makes it much easier to adjust brightness and contrast incrementally with the mouse without having to use the buttons on the underside of the panel. Not sure if the 915N has this feature but it may.
 
915n does have MagicTune ,... but based on the rest of your response I understand why you left it out ... good luck .. Personally I would go with the 930B ... I currently have a 912N and love it .. but 8ms and everything else the same would be that much better, wish I had the ready cash to get one myself.
 
Could somene comment on the Samsung 172x and also on the viewsonic? I'm lookin to buy a good 17 inch lcd for gaming.
 
It looks like I will go for the Samsung 930B. It is the most expensive of the lot, but it has the advantage of being available at Best Buy so I can more easily deal with any issues it may have.


EDIT: I bought the Samsung 930B. No dead pixels, no ghosting, freaking awesome. :D
 
does the 930b have the same "brighter at the bottom than the top" issue??

its very annoying on the L90D+ to be honest and I was looking to go with the sammy.
 
172x: i have mine under DVI and its stunning. absolutely NO ghosting (i play lots of FPS) in any games at all. colors are precise and very beautiful. I DO have a LITTLE blacklight leakage around my edges of my screen, but it doesnt impact anything i view/game. the monitor is a LITTLE dark by default, you'll probably have to ramp up the brightness if you're used to viewing LCDs.

its wonderful, NO problems at all, the bezel is incredibly thin, maybe 1/2-3/4 of an inch. TEXT is wonderful; i dont know how i survived on an CRT all these years.

as for interpolation, it sucks basically. you'll need to run it at 1280x1024 no matter what; although i havent extensively examined it, (in games.. its horrible) be prepared to pair it with a nice 6series/800 videocard.
