here's the choice: D-Link DI-604, Linksys BEFSX41 or Netgear RP614

this is for my home, 4 or 5 comps connected at any time max...not looking for anything fancy, i just want stability
i'm replacing an old BEFSR41, which tends to drop the connection every now and then, so again, stability is what i'm after

thanx for the reply...i heard good things about the BEFSX41 in particular
then again many swear by Netgear or D-Link, so I'm a little confused...plus a lot of the info out there tends to be dated

For regular non Wifi routing
any of the 3 you listed would be very good choices
personaly i would go with the d-link
mainly because they have had fewer security holes in thier equipment than linksys

Care to elaborate what? Also, Linksys has been releasing new firmwares that have been tightening up the firewall function.

Go for the Linksys BEFSX41.

I like it a lot. I have one at my house, I installed one at my dad's lake house, and my dad's real estate partner has one. All VPN'd together.

I've been trying to get another one on eBay just for a backup.

If you decide to go wireless definately go with the WRT54G.

You can apply the same general idea to standard routers given the intense competion which would explain why one router of one brand works great for one person but absolutely crappy for one person.

well alright then...it looks like it's gonna be the BEFSX41...maybe i'll post some impressions tomorrow after i set it up...

Linksys had the problem a while ago with there being a generic username with no password hardwired into every router....

Also on the 54g linksys i have had consistant problems with it that require it to be restarted about once every 10 days, this is with both older and later firmware

I have a D-link DWL-5000ap for my house and i pluged it in about 2 years ago and havent touched it since

I have little doubt the linksys will work perfect for you

the routers are generaly so reliable that when a client asks which one they shouls get i ask if they like the color blue, silver or black more
(linksys, d-link, smc)

Not for nothing....

I heard nothing but good things about Linksys but the deal I got on a Netgear wireless router and bridge was too good to pass up.
Plus the 4 ports on the back will make its so I can hook both my XBOX and my comp (whenever I get it done) wired and run the other 2 computers on wireless.

I live in a house thats atleast 90 years old (read, really thick walls) and my room is about 100ft from the router, with at least 5 walls and a bathroom (read, all the piping is between the router and bridge) and as far as I can tell I'm getting a good signal.

Just throwing that out.

do you know, by any chance, what version firmware you're using on the SX41?

i flashed mine to 1.51 and so far so good...no obvious problems, but only time will tell how stable it is
