Help me cheat my college network...

Hey all, as a power user with games and video editing and what not, I was pretty pissed when I got here to my uni and found that we had to install all sorts of crap from a cd to access the web. It installs something called an Aegis Client for the actual connection and signing on, but changes all sorts of system settings, including somehow forcing automatic updates and requiring symantec anti-virus, both of which slow down my comp terribly.

I'd like to regain control of my computer, so if anyone can help me figure out a way to get into the network and bypass using this cd altogether, or somehow change what it installs to only the aegis client, I'd be one happy student.
