Ok I need some input to build a new machine for myself

to replace my caveman PIII machine

have tons of SCSI drives and a 2940U2W card in it now but would like to keep this machine in onepeice for the wife and kids

So where to start?

I want to Overclock ( hobby ) and my kids like to game

I also like to have nice stuff

I like and have had good luck with

Abit / Intel

so im thinkin an Abit IC7-3Max for starters (run a lan here in the house )

I hear the 2.4C intell is proly the best / biggest bang for the buck

where to get a good steping at and what is a good steping ( number wise )?

Like to spend some dough on a good sink and loud fans have never bothered me

I run 6 fans in this machine now LOL ( i think if i make it to quite i could not sleep at night )

what memory brands and types / timeings? ECC or no?

( think 512 X 2 for starters )

I like Sparkle and Fortron cant do a PCP&C now tho

Just dont like Antec had 2 die in the past

( like to go bigger than smaller 450W+)

But later when this intel platforms dead i dont want to replace power supplies

ie; ATX & EPS12V to ??

its a bummer that the AGP on the way out but for this one I'l have to bite the bullit

so im thinkin get a cheap one now and later when there costs down and there givein them away

il get a better one

So whats a good cheap card (AGP) that i can use?

Would likr to just gop DVD now and proly do some burning

so i can see spending some here now

Raid is where its at LOL

love the Sata idea have had best luck with seagate in the past

( that was with SCSI and ATA )

All this in a Lain Li case #PC-61

just cant bring my self to a vapochill just yet

so being a cheap skate and still likein nice / kewl stuff in mind

let me hear your ideas both good and bad

whats clockin good over at your house?

where might some better buys be?

So help me build this pig and then we'll smoke it LOL

My advice? If your wanting to do any amount of OC'ing, stay away from the IC7 line of Abit boards, or Abit in general. Yes they have nice features, but, they have shoddy design. No VTT tracking will make one nightmare of a VTT mod if you ever want to do medium to high OCs'.

You will hear pros and cons from everyone concerning just about every choice you make,

Here's my opinion,

I would save a few dollars and go with an 865pe board. I have never had the slightest trouble with mine, except for the annoying NB Fan which was easily replaced. Then your feelings wont be so hurt when you're ready to upgrade to lga prescott, or athlon 64.

2.4c is an excellent chip in any stepping, I have a D1 which will do 3.3 without breaking a sweat. I've heard MO stepping does miracles.

Tight timings are not as important for p4's as high bandwidth so I would go with the fastest tightest timing I could get above PC4000.
