Could some one help me build a gaming PC you know like tell me what I need.

That's a pretty tall order, but I'll go ahead and get the ball rolling. First answer this: how much are you willing to spend? Also, do you currently have any parts or will you be starting from scratch?

I am willing to spend like lets say $500-$900 and i'm going to have to start over from new.

what games are you going to be playing and what else are you going to be doing on this computer?? do you download a lot of stuff? play games at high resolutions? want good frame rates? we need some specifics if we are going to help you.. you can talk to me on msn = dirtyape@cableaz.com or on AIM = FlamingHuevos

500 to 900 is peanuts. You'll need 500 just for the video card, and at least that much for your cpu. :D

If you are crazy and get extreme top of the line stuff then yea.

You can easily get a nice good solid upgrade to:

Amd 64 3400
mobo
6800GT
ram
hd

for <1k

That's what i'm doing.
I got my 6800GT for 352
160GB Seagate HD for 59.99 after rebate
768 corsair 3200 XMS ram for 115

Now All that I need are the cpu and mobo, run roughly around 300-400'ish for them, so he could do that with his price range.

depends on what kind of system you want. if you want a completely top of the line system, then no. you can't do it for that much. but you can still build a really good machine for that much.
get a 9800 pro for the video card and get a non 64 bit athlon for the processor. you'll have plenty of money to build the system.

If you're going new get a nvidia GT, AMD64 3400 1MB cache, and at least a GB of ram. Although a 9800XT/pro is blazing fast it's going to start hurting in all the newer generation of games. Computers move fast so don't get stuck after spending all that cash. If you can't afford it don't comprimise save up for a few months. Stuff gets cheaper and you can get the faster stuff for the same price you would of paid. And don't skip on things like hard drives, opitcal drives, cases and psu's all aid in the performance of a system.

He'll probably need a monitor, optical drives, sound card (if he doesn't want onboard sound), etc....don't forget those.

most people who alreay have a computer don't upgrade new monitors and such everytime they upgrade a new computer.

I'm just assuming he wants to upgrade his computer.

If he needs a new monitor/case/powersupply/etc , yea that can run a bit more....

Check my sig. Unless you just want to play Doom3 then substitute the vid card for a 6800 Ultra OC.

Ummmm... he won't be able to afford that... $500-900 guys, starting from new.

I would suggest a 6800 plain... it'll do you well.

LOL, did you even read the thread? 500-900 man, now you're just showing off.

This is what you want to do

Processor : AMD 2500+ ---> 3200+
Motherboard : nForce2, dual channel support, agp 8x, SATA support, DDR400 Support
Ram : 1 Gig PC3200+
Vcard : ATI Radeon 9800 pro (under $200 if you shop, best deal for a bargin gaming rig)

These are your core parts, as for brand ? just shop around and use your head, you get what you pay for .. always remember that. Toss in your monitor (CRTs are much cheaper, better color, higher resolution and last longer, go with a CRT), keyboard, mouse, etc.. etc.. and you should be able to fit in under $900. www.newegg.com is great for these items.

gl and hf.

I was just putting together a gaming comp for a friend of a friend in a similar price range. However he decided to get a prebuilt *shudders* Anyways what I came up with was:
2400+mobile $80
Shuttle AN35N-Ultra $57
Antec SLK3700 w/350wattpsu $74
MSI 9800pro $198
WD 80gb "se" hdd $60
512mb Kingston pc3200 valueram $76
Viewsonic G71F 17in crt $176
Thermaltake Volcano 7+ $21
Microsoft Intellimouse 1.0 $18
Microsoft INternet Keyboard $21
Logitech Z640 5.1's $50
total: $923
All prices off newegg and include shipping, it's not perfect, but it'd be pretty decent, needs a cd drive and possibly a floppy but he could prolly get those off an old comp (im assuming) Not sure how that valueram is, I have some kingston pc2700 valueram in another comp that can barely do pc2700 speeds @ the timings it's rated for.

Having your friend change his mind at the last second: Priceless

I don't think it worth it anymore to get an AXP if you want one of the top models, when you can get an A64 2800+ / Chaintech NF3 board for a tiny bit more ($222 at Mwave).

Uh, he stated that he is going to have to start over from scratch.

I am big on price/performance ratio. I recommend.

NForce3 board
AMD64 3000 or 3200+
9800Pro or GF6800GT
Any 7200-10k RPM hard drive with low seek time
LiteOn optical drives because they are cheap
1GB PC3200 RAM, name brand but cheap stuff

That will get you by for now. When recommending two things, the first one is the cheaper.
