I want to experiment with freebsd, install php, mysql, mail toaster so that I can use it for my experimental server where I can learn php.

What specifications would be good enough for this server? Should I go with a P4 or AMD? I know that I would need a lot of ram (thinking of 1gb ddr400). I will be using VNC (I have to check if they have a freebsd version) so I do not need a keyboard, monitor, mouse.

I also have a domain name that I purchased and is not hosted anywhere so I would like to take advantage of this and create a hosting environment where I can host my private car gallery.

a) motherboard (please recommend)
b) processor (please recommend)
c) memory - I am thinking of 1GB DDR400.
d) CD Drive - I'll find something cheap on newegg
e) network card - I'll find something cheap on newegg
f) case - I'll find something cheap on newegg.
g) power supply - (please recommend)

This would be a tight budget but I would appreciate everybody's feedback.

Kind regards,

KP

You don't need much. Just get a cheap Athlon XP, e.g. a 266 MHz FSB model, 256 MB or so of DDR266, as big a hard disk as you need (I advise Seagate's Barracuda 7200 RPM disks) and a compatible board (I like Biostar's tiny-but-powerful M7NCG 400, which has great onboard ethernet, audio and video.) For a Power supply, snag an Antec PSU around 300 watts, and an optical drive from NEC or Lite-On. That'll be far more than powerful enough to do what you mentioned.
