After much thought, I'm upgrading my A64 3700+ to the Duo E6600. As for what board and 2gb RAM to get, I'm a bit lost. I am not an OC'er, though I might try to push it to 3.0ghz just for kicks. I also don't plan to use SLI, since I just can't afford a 2nd 7900GTX!
I'm not trying to get on the cutting edge, though I also understand that matching the 6600 with a cheap budget board would be silly.
Could any of you please help with recommendations for the RAM & board?
Thanks ...

bumpy-ti bump :)

I'm thinking of getting the ASUS P5B Deluxe/Wifi mobo. If I do go that route, any suggestions for complementary 2 gig RAM? I'm looking to spend around $250 for the RAM (from Newegg, after rebates).

Thanks!

i believe the only reason people get the P5B over the P5W DH Deluxe is due to ability to reach higher FSB speeds. if its features and stability you want, i believe the P5W DH Deluxe wins out over the P5B.

also for $250 AR you can get almost any set of ddr2-800 2gb ram. corsair has been one of the most popular brands, the standard ddr2-800 xms2 2gb set:

is right in your price range.

Be sure to get ram with Micron chips.

Some of the suggested ones look good.

But dont expect too awesome of an OC without good ram!

Thanks all for your helpful feedback!
I've heard decent things about the Gigabyte DS3; it's also cheaper than the ASUS board I was looking at. Is there a particularly strong reason why I should NOT go with the cheaper DS3? (e.g. stability, performance, overclockability, etc.)

As for RAM, I'm definitely leaning towards the G.Skills that hofan recommended. If I do end up overclocking, it will be mildly (to 3.0 ghz at most).

Cheers ...

Here's my e6600 OC'd to 3Ghz with 7900GTX set up:

(specs, pictures & benchmarks)

Its whisper quiet with all of the 120mm fans. & 140mm fan on the PSU.

The DS3 works great for me, and my G.Skill ram worked fine even with the early 1.8v (Ram) BIOS's. The G.Skill I have hits 930Mhz @ 4-4-4-12 @ 2.0v and 1Ghz @ 5-6-6-17 (333FSB with 3x ratio)

3Ghz is unfortunately the max for my chip.
But I can run it at 9x334, 8x375, 7x430 or 6x473 (max for motherboard is 473).

That's exactly the video card I have (from evga), so that's good to know! I assume that gaming performance is flawless? Since I own a 24" monitor, I like to run them at 1920x1200 resolution.

Look at my 3dMark benchmarks to guage your performance.
