Help me build a brute-force monster!

Hi!

I'd like to get some solid advice, as various google-sleuthing has netted me with some mixed answers, and I'm looking to be educated.

Objective:
Purchase 3 graphics cards to optimize a current system's capability of GPU-based brute force password cracking on a TrueCrypt volume. Additionally, select the correct application to handle the job (currently tinkering with IGPX with 3 580GTXs, but I want moar power!). Considering the fact that I will likely move on after this project, I am only interested in upgrading the video cards to the best I can buy (either now, or a few months from now) while using my current hardware configuration, since the cards will likely be re-purposes as gaming cards afterwards.

Needs:
- Video cards must be able to run on a eVGA x58 SLI board
- Brute force application must run on Windows 7 64-bit (currently using IG, but open to alternatives)

Hopefully I addressed the key questions - I essentially just need to know what cards to buy and if there is a better application for my setup than IG. I tinkered around with TrueCrack a while but the learning curve for a non-Linux Windows guy was a little much for me and I'd prefer not to learn all things Linux just to tinker around with a side-project.

Thanks!

After doing some additional research, I might be open to many of the distributed server-client applications that also do this. I have approximately 5 machines running high-end i7's in the house, each of which can support approximately 3 2-slot GPU's. I'd love for some suggestions/advice/guidance as to which GPU I should be aiming for, since current reading shows that a 580GTX > a 680GTX, and I don't understand why when the 680 has 3x as many CUDA cores.

I'd be willing to just buy 15 ATI cards and run the entire setup as a networked cluster if I knew which card to buy. Help! =P

AES RIPEMD-160, 12 characters, lowercase alpha with numbers. Even a single 580GTX could handle that using IG in approximately 1 year. I'd like to take that down from 365 days to as little as possible - I just need to know which graphics cards to do it with!

I believe the 7970s are the best choice at the moment, having more raw computing power than any nvidia cards? I remember reading an article about a password cracking machine with something like 8 7970s.

Sorry to interupt the advice, but what password cracking will you be doing? Is this legal?

It's my container, I already know the password. =) This is a weekend hobby, I've been interested in GPU crunching for some time and now seems like a good time to get into it.

Afterwards I can either play with bitcoin mining for a bit or re-purpose for gaming setups.

No, you are wrong. A 680 is on average 40% faster than a 580 in most games. If you are looking for Compute performance then a 580 is the way to go. A 680 is a better "Gaming card'" than a 580. It has much beefier tessellation performance and a nice clock speed boost enough to pawn a 580 in many games... I play Crysis on a 680 at 1080p 8xAA Very High at 60 fps average with very rare dips to the 40`s. A 580 does not even come close to that frame rate in this game... same applies to all games except for AC3 where I get lackluster fps but then the game is flawed in every way on the PC.
