Help me borg my school (the technical side)

When school starts again, I want to borg my entire school. With permission of course. However, it seems to be a bit harder than borging average PCs.

So, first off, an explanation of how my school network works. Should be pretty basic.

We have a server room. dur hur. Then, we have about 80 or so desktops that are connected through various wired switches, as well as a bunch of wireless switches that connect the notebooks. The cabling is fiber for the most part, but some standard network cables as well.

Now, here's where I have no clue on how to do this because I suck at networks:

Each user has his own network account, with a S:/ drive. This is managed through the server. However, the C:/ drive is local. I am not going to get access to the S:/ drives for privacy reasons. No chance.
Now, I obviously need to install on every computer's C:/

however, I have no permission to regedit, so there's no way I'm getting F@H to start up evertime the rig is turned on. I would need temporary admin privileges to do this. That should be possible. However, does each user have their own registry or is the registry local on the computer? Basically, how the heck do I let F@H start up whenever ANY user logs onto ANY account from ANY computer?

Even better, is the a way to let F@H run in the memory somehow, so it's not user dependant at all and even runs while the computer is in the login screen?

So, any guide on doing this would be great. Thanks.

If you set up F@H to run as a service (with the -service parameter), it will run in the background for all users on that computer. It will even run if no user is logged in. It will run invisibly (no GUI, no console). However, to get it to run as a service, you will need admin rights--service information is stored in the registry.

The F@H FAQ will help you set it up correctly.

And just to add too that because it doesn't say (in the above post), you want to install the "Console Version" of the app, then it will run independantly of whoever is logged in as well as "at the login" prompt just like you're requesting.

18.2 Ghz Folding for the [H]orde

Oops. I forgot that part. Grimmda's right. DL and install the console version.

If the students don't have admin rights, there's NO WAY for them to shup off the console version, right?
High schoolers are just about the worst thing you can do to a PC.

You can still go to task manager and kill the two processes.... but next reboot, it'll start right back up.....

It'll be invisible to them, with the exception of the 100% processor usage (something you may want to consider limiting to 50% or 75%,etc... )... They could start and stop the service if they have access to the service.msc GUI.....

Keep on Folding!! For the [H]orde!!

Or if you want to be really evil, you can set the service to recovery itself. Just go into the services properties, and on the recovery tab, set all of the failures to Restart the Service and tell it to restart after 0 minutes, and as soon as you kill it, it'll come right back. Or you can set it for 1 minute so they can think they killed it and then it will come back. :D

Agreed!
wasn't aware you could do that!

I would NOT do that. I have users that intentionally turn off F@H because they don't like the minor slowdowns that it can provoke. If you feel like you must set it to recovery, set it for the full length of a class period - that way there is a good chance that the user that terminated the process will be done using the computer.

don't run folding at full speed on these machines, it will not result in any good and F@H will get blamed for any little issue on the machines "oh my AIM crashed, it's because this piece of .... pc is running at 100% due to F@H!!!!!"

personally I'd do 50% settings on each machine as suggested above

PS: you not only suck at networks, but also suck at drawing network diagrams. Just thought I'd mention that ;-) lol

But thanks for all the help, expect to have over 100ghz for the [H]orde from me in a few months. Unless the tech guy is a dick.

Unless the tech guy is a dick.
Well, that just ruined my hopes of another 100GHz. What HS "tech" isn't a moron? You have to realize that these guys aren't getting paid much...because they hardly know anything.
