So my computer has been acting flaky for a few months now and i just ignored it because i was busy with school and i had my laptop if there was anything i couldn't get done any other way. Now that school is winding down, it's time to fix this cause the freezing is getting really annoying.

Currently all i've got in my computer is a soltek SL-75DRV5 mobo, Athlon XP 2100+, and a GF4 Ti4600. No sound card for now because there was a point when i thought that was the culprit but no luck when i took it out. The problem is that anytime i open media player to play an mp3 or video, the window opens and right when it starts playing, whatever note it was on just holds and i have to reboot. It also happens in Splinter Cell 2, anytime i try to start a game, it lasts for about 5-10 seconds and everything freezes. One weird thing, i've got a WINFAST TV2000XP tv card and if i'm using that, it will usually work no problem but if it does freeze while that is on, the sound keeps going but everything else freezes and i have to reboot anyway.

Any advice as to anything else i can try would be much appreciated.

Thank you!!!

Sounds driver related.
But I would run all the standard Hardware test first just to rule that out.
Memtest86 followed by Prime95 then just add in 3dMark to finnish it off.
If it passes all the test then start looking at the Software.
If it fails any test them start looking harder why it failed.

Luck...... :D

I agree, sounds like a driver problem. However, in addition to what was mentioned above, it could be a matter of overheating. Since the problem seems to arise when you put your system under load, heat could be the culprit. Check that all of your fans are working, and if you can, monitor the temps of the CPU and whatnot. My old comp used to hang like that because the CPU overheated.

Hrmm, but yeah, check the memory, PSU, and temps on the CPU. Also, as always, make sure there is no visible damage to the motherboard (ie. buldging caps, burnt traces, etc). Good luck. :)

So i tried to uninstall and reinstall my sound drivers and disable the onboard sound and it still didn't fix the problem. My roommate actually mentioned the bulging caps on capacitors on the motherboard and now that you suggest it i'm starting to think he's not as weird as i thought :) There are like 6 capacitors that have a noticably protruded end compared to other ones. Could this be my problem and if so, am i SOL and pretty much have to buy a new mobo?

Thanks for the replies!!

The easiest way to tell if the caps are bad, is to look at the tops of them. they should be flat, not bubbly. :) Also, if you can find others on the board of the same make and model, compare them. If some look different than others, odds are, they're broken. I hope it's not the caps, cuz unless you've got some mean soldering skills, the mobo is gone. :(

ultimately, if the caps on the board aren't working right, it would cause all sorts of weird problems, especially when under load. Just take a good look at them, and you should know if they are bad or not.

take a grand poopy on your motherboard always helps :D

no actauly it sounds driver related more than likely its vid card related, or power related maybe your psu on ur lappy is taking a shit?

or it could just need to be formatted

I've been having the same problem off and on for a few months now. I've got a bfg 6800 gt oc. I RMA'd one card because I thought that was the problem but the new one is doing the same thing. I've tried a few different sets of drivers and it doesn't seem to help (though the problem was A LOT more frequent w/ the latest 71.89's). Let me know if you come across something that fixes it! :(

Just outta curiousity, what kinda system do you have (mobo, power supply, etc)? Thanks.

my mobo is a soltek SL-75DRV5
Video card: GF 4 Ti4600
PSU: Antec True power 430
RAM: 512 Mushkin PC2700

Based on the fact that i can see some noticable caps buldging on capacitors and that everything else in my computer now has been tested and it doesn't make a difference whether it's in or not, i'm going to say mobo at this point and suck it up and buy a new one and a new processor :) I guess every cloud has a silver lining. It's upgrade time now :D
