So I'm rocking a 5870, but I'm still using a 22" TN. I'd really like to upgrade to a better, larger monitor, something in the 24" range (preferably 1920x1200). My budget is under ~$500 per monitor (preferably less, of course), as I'd like to get 3 of them for Eyefinity. Thus, DisplayPort is a must (don't want to bother with adapters). I was looking at the U2410, but the thread here turned me off. I don't really follow monitors, so I'm hoping you guys can help me out :)

I say go for the u2410. Dells return policy is great if you arent happy with them.

The HP uses the SAME panel as the dell and doesn't come with Dells superior warranty. So going with the Hp is a sidegrade at best from a U2410. Plus the U2410 has a 'game mode' that really lowers the input lag for those faster FPS games.

Do not get the U2410. people are having A LOT of problems with this panel. I don't know why the people above me would even suggest that. Get the HP. It is the best you can get for around ~$500.

I second nastyskillz.

Make sure you read the whole discussion (at least flip through 5 pages at a time) on both the Dell U2410 AND the HP 2475 before you make a decision.

You might re-consider.;)

EDIT: Sorry didn't read that you had already read up on the Dell. Probably the 6th time i've done this now  but I'm going to recommend the NEC EA231wmi. Really what a monitor!. I went through 4 Dell U2410 so there is a scope of comparison. NEc is something like $360. Fully $140 cheaper than the Dell but performs light years ahead of the Dell. Res is 1920x1080 so you can make use of your 5850 and 23" extra wide so movies look good. 23" at 1920x1080 also produces a sharper image IMO. I come home at night, turn on my screen and a big grin comes to my face. This doesn't happen often mind you, but my wallpaper now looks stunning and now I understand when people say the colours pop, because they do.
Really an amazing monitor at this price and can tide you over (its tiding me over) until something better comes out. Though not sure because I like it a lot ATM.
3rd time. I lub my NEC :D

I'm looking for the same thing.

Bingo. I'm not really a fan of 16:9 1920x1080. One of the things I want is more vertical space from 1680x1050. I looked at the NEC EA231wmi and it looks like a great monitor - if only they had a 1920x1200 24" version I'd be all over it.

I was looking for a decent x1200 24 for gaming to match my G2400W. After a prolonged search I decided to go with 2x 28. They are on the way atm.

I am also frustrated with the lack of 24 inch models that put out 1920x1200. Seems the trend is going to 1920x1080. I wonder how much of that was accelerated due to the cost reduction trends and attempt to cub costs. Maybe if the global economy didn't explode and fail in a blaze of glory we would have still been able to get a decent 24 @ 1920x1200.

Let me know what you decide on. In case the 2x 28 don't work out.

hehe i'm exactly in the same boat as OP.

It comes down to the U2410 or LP2475w for me.
But both panels have issues of their own. And for their price class (here in europe anyways) that shouldn't happen on 660+ euro panels.

Both are the same panels, except the U2410 is the newer revision of the same panel.

Still, the U2410 has several issues, green/pink tints, rgb dithering etc.

I do want a 1920*1200 16:10 24" screen, and preferably IPS.
Therefor my choices are limited.

I'm now waiting for Nec to release their PA241W. I'm hoping it's within the same price range as the monitors above but without the flaws.

Currently the NEC EA231WMi-BK looks really good price/performance wise.
Except it's 1920*1080 and has a bit of trouble with the brightness distribution.

It seems no (affordable) screen is perfect. And I have to make a decision soon.
My old Viewsonic VX922 is failing (the famous capacitor problems, black screen blinking power led ;))

They do. It's called the NEC 2490wuxi. A fabulous monitor, however it retails for over $1000.

Where could I even buy the 2490wuxi nowadays? I've done a google shopping search and the only decent place is PC Connection who has it "On Order".

NEC if you're listening, I'm ready to buy, just don't have any place to buy from. Even your site has them Temporarily OOS.

My thoughts exactly. If it had been relatively straightforward to procure a good sample of one of these bad boys I would have willingly laid down the cash.

As it is I have the NEC EA231 and I'm happy (because I got decent colour uniformity/brightness distribution across the screen).

To the OP & LarsMarkelson if you can wait around 3 months then this is probably the best advice ATM:

I'm now waiting for Nec to release their PA241W

From the NEC PDF that was linked a while back, they will come in a range of formats some 16:9 and some 16:10.

It is most likely going to be replacement for NEC2490wuxi range as current 2490wuxi2 does not appear to be a v.good monitor for the price.

If EA231 is indication of where NEC quality is at, then it is a safe bet that the PA series 23",24",27" &30" monitors should be decent, reliable and worth the wait.

I am also keen to see how these monitors perform b/c original 2490wuxi were stellar monitors and NEC really don't haev anything in this category ATM worthy of replacing it.

Best advice ATM if you don't want to go 1920x1080 route is to wait a bit.

Yarg. You're right, but I really hate waiting for new technology to come out. 99% of the time the original release date gets pushed back.

Since I'll be using my monitor for my job (video work), I think I'm going to bite the bullet and pick up a 2490wuxi2 from bhphoto... $840, not too bad. Link here.

From what I've read of the wuxi2, besides the lack of polarizer, it's a pretty good monitor. It seems to have all the great picture quality features of the 2490, as long as you're viewing it straight on. Which I'd be doing, and I also wouldn't be using it to show clients things or work with someone else next to me with... so I think I'll be fine. MAYBE?!?!?!

Hm, there's also the Apple 24" LED Cinema Display 1920x1200: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MB382LL/A?fnode=MTY1NDA5OQ&mco=MTA4MzU1MzE

$900. Don't see people talking about it much though... hrmmmm, off to research more! :D

What about the HP LP2475w? Both the U2410 and the LP2475w seemed to have pretty solid reviews, but it looks like QC issues are killing the U2410. Is the LP2475w any better?

Additional vertical is an issue in what?

I generally have no issue with 1080 pixels of vertical (and I came from 1600x1200 to 1920x1080). Where the additional screen real-estate comes in handy (both in shooters and RTS, but especially in sims and tthe odd MMO) is horizontal, not vertical. If up-and-down scroll is bad, side-to-side scroll is worse.

Also, support is up (way up) for 1920x1080 and other 16:9 resolution options (if you can't game at 1920x1080, there's 1280x720, which lets you keep 16:9 if the display uses a 16:9 AR). If anything, you are more likely to see a 16:9 option instead of 16:10 in a game.

Two reasons:

1) I'm a developer, and code is vertical. Widescreens are near useless when coding, whereas vertical space is a godsend

2) Portrait. I want to be able to run portrait Eyefinity as well as code and surf the web in portrait, and then you are talking 1080px wide vs. 1200px wide.

Hence why I want some good quality monitors, as this is my primary system that I use for everything, not just gaming.

If you are not looking to break the bank and want a good solid 24inch 16:10 LCD, take look at the Dell 2405. I bought mine from this seller and the screen was perfect. Only one needs to be DP and the adapters work pretty well. You would be looking at 600$ plus 100$ for adapter.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Dell-24-2405FP-LCD-TFT-Flat-Panel-Monitor-Grade-B-USB_W0QQitemZ200407856532QQcmdZViewItemQQptZComputer_Monitors?hash=item2ea93d3594

It absolutely must have display port. I want to use whatever I buy for a good 3-5 years, at least, and I don't want to deal with adapters if I decide to get the 6 port 5xxx series card, for example (or the 6 port 6xxx series card in a year ;) )

In addition to coding, what about image editing, photography, CAD etc.

There are a multitude of tasks that benefit from extra vertical especially if you are a professional in your field.

The NEC EA231 is a compromise for most professionals. Great image quality at the expense of screen real estate. Besides which pros should really be using a better monitor than this as their primary screen (hence my recommendation to wait for new PA range). Makes a good secondary screen though. ;)

Even I notice the lack of vertical when trying to tweak photos in Win7.

A lot of images meant for 16:10 are being cropped by the monitor towards the bottom of the screen. Oh well no biggie as I am very much so an amateur.:)

Anyone knows if price will drop in 3 months or so. I think i should just wait a little bit :D :D

I'm looking for a 2nd 24" monitor and I've always liked the Dells. Why hasn't anyone considered the 2408? Got great arrays of ports including DP and its a PVA panel like my current LG. I understand its not the most recent release but if it works, why not? Plus, cheapest I found is 423 which makes it even sweeter. Any insight from anyone?

Where does one even find those anymore - besides the sites selling them for $700?

My current 22" S-PVA is dying I think, so I too am looking for a replacement, and it's frustrating how difficult it is sometimes trying to figure out what kind of panel a monitor uses. Sometimes the site will tell you, sometimes it won't... sometimes you'll even get differing answers.
