I have a compaq armada M700, and the computer runs fairly well when it's just running off of the battery, but it has problems with random shut downs when the ac adapter is plugged in, it also freezes occassionally when it's running off the battery, any suggestions on how to solve this would be greatly appreciated.

Maybe a heat related issue? Is it an older lappie that maybe has a little dust build up on it's air vents?

Is the problem more noticeable when you're under a heavy load?

umm.. yeah - start from dusting it - blow some compressed air through the vents.. or take it apart if you're confident enough.. it also might be bad power supply..

If you have to replace the fan it is a huge job. You have to completely disasseble the laptop because the screws holding the heatsink and fan down are on the bottom of the motherboard. But it does sound like a heat issue. Download mobilemeter and tell us what the temps are when it shuts down.

This could be a heat related issue, but it could also be other things like memory. I would try to get all the dust out and check the fan to see if it is spinning. If that does not fix the problem and the fan is spinning I would run memtest. If it is not RAM or heat then I would probably start looking at a new laptop.
