[HELP] Is this a standard socket 775 cooler layout?

Hey all,

yes, i got an Dell XPS600, and i am interested in changing the stock cooler cause i want to make some room in the case. (not i am not going to buy a new case and mob and such, so dont suggest it)


Is this layout a standard 775 hole layout in the board? i looked and some boards and some seem to have the holes more squared off, but some mounting kits would seem to fit these holes... but i am not sure...

If anyone could confirm as to what, if any, after market coolers or adapters i could use would be appreciated.

The system has a Pentium 820D (3.2ghz dual core and 4mb L2 total)

it almost seems like a mix between 775 and 478, but smaller then 478, but not as wide as 775

I thought 820D was 2.8ghz Dual Core...

I don't think that's LGA775. I think that's a DELL ghetto rigged mix between LGA775 and s478.

mmmm, checking this thign says 840 on it , i thought it was an 820D or that is what the person selling it said..lol whoops!


and so true, seems dell did do some weird crap.


i am thinking W/C the CPU now, DD has some blocks that "moight" have the mounting area pass over the holes for this, so i may be able to just drill new mounting holes in the blocks.

not sure yet, got alot of measuring to do to be sure.

yell dell uses a mix of lga775 and s478 to make their brackets and no normal aftermarket hsf will fit them unless you make one urself which if the case may be that i would suggest getting a new mobo as that is the better route
and while ur at it change the case but you could still possibly use the same psu if u wanted to be a little skimpy

cuz otherwise do not chnage a thing on ur dell just change the fans to better more powerful fans (also noisier but if u want cooler u want noisier) and u should have a decent system

Aren't dells BTX? They have pretty good cooling, but nothing to overclock with. Like he said, you probably have to drill your own holes.

Btw, it looks like you can use s478 HSF. Will s478 blocks fit?

Dell has been doing this for years. I recently upgraded 7 Dell systems with the 845 chipset and they also had funky looking brackets.

And that is a BTX form factor just like the above poster stated. The cpu is really close to the edge with the northbridge right behind it. Plus the memory banks are really close and in-line with air flow. Everything gets cooled by one fan.


This might work for you. Make sure you double check the dimensions before you buy.

yes they are but the heatsink mounting the OP has is not BTX cuz the dell BTX has 2 long screws that get screwed in to mount the btx heatsink
the OP's heatsink is for an older ATX style

yeah, i almost had some hope, it almost looked closer to a socket 603 mount, but it is not.


i am getting measurements now and comparing it to what blocks would work, i am going to mod this mofo like no tomorrow i decided.

I am going to try for water cooling , some of the blocks i have looked at might fit with a simple re-drilling of the holes already there, crossing my fingers.


I dont want to buy a new mobo and case and PSU - i will make do with this sucker and make it kick arse.

Also since i now know it is a Foxconn mobo used for the system and i know the crystal id #, going to see how CPU FSB will work :d
