Help, is my computer dead??

Last night my computer began restarting at random. I thought it was a virus at first and ran anti-virus, adaware, and spybot and although they removed many things, it didn't seem to help any. So I decided to wait till today to look at it more. I unplugged it this morning before I went to school. When I got home, I plugged it in and tried turning it on and going into safe mode to see if the problem occured. It did not, so I rebooted. However, it wouldn't even boot into windows, it kept restarting. Finally I shut it off and realized that my pump wasn't pumping the water through the tubes, so my cpu was overheating. I undid everything, emptied out the water, and put a fan and heatsink onto the cpu. I just tried starting it up, but I am not getting any video output, and there doesn't seem to be a post beep(I can hear a faint noise, but I can't tell what it's coming from) Would it display anything if the cpu were fried? There didn't appear to be any damage done to anything when I checked, but now I am not sure what to do. Any help is appreciated.
 
erm, maybe under-clock it to see what happens when you're not putting full power through it? That's the best I've got. If only your CPU was overheating, I doubt it would be anything else that got messed up from that.
 
Do you underclock it by going into the BIOS? If so, I can't do that because nothing is displaying on my monitor. Should I be seeing something on my monitor if I have a fried CPU in my motherboard?
 
err, yeah you need to go into the BIOS, but if you're getting nothing on your monitor, I dunno. Unless your monitors busted, sounds like a fried cpu, but don't take my word for it. Wait for a few more suggestions before succumbing to an upgrade.
 
what kind of CPU is it? its very unlikly that if you have any flavor p4 or an athlon after palomino that it would overheat from not having any water, it would shut down before it died

my guess is the mainboard. what kind of board are you running?
 
I have an Athlon XP 1800+ and a Shuttle AK35GTR motherboard. The fans and cd drives are functioning and there is a little green led on the motherboard that is lit up. I'm not sure if that means anything.

well, i have a dead laptop, the motherboard is fried. the battery charges, the lights come on, the cd rom and hdd are powered, and everything else, but the damn thing wont post or send a singnal to the moniter/lcd

you got any friends that have a socket A board you can test the chip with? i think its the motherboard personally.
 
No, I don't have any friends that have a socket A motherboard. Is there any way to test it using a multimeter or something?
