Help installing XFX HD 4890 (Molex Problem)

Just recieved my XFX HD 4890 XXX but having problems installing it, I'm currently using my N810 tablet to write this so I appreciate a fast reply if possible as my PC is unplugged downstairs.

Card has 2 molex connectors (8 pin and above a 6 pin). My PSU is in my sig, I have 2, 3 pin molex cables from my PSU to the card which came with my PSU, these 2 cables have the words PCI-E written on them. Plugging these into the card and turning my PC on results in competive beeps and a black screen with red text saying something about the 2 power leads not correctly installed or something like that.

What can I do? The quick install booklet is not very helpful. Do I need an 8 pin molex and a 6 pin instead of what I currently have, which is 2, 6 pins?. Please help! :eek:

I did not even know the XXX edition had a 8 pin on it. The card is overclocked to 900MHz so it probably wants the extra juice from the 8 pin to stay stable. I know there is 6 pin to 8 pin connectors you can buy. You may have to look into that. Did the card not come with any kind adapters to allow you to make it work?

The card comes with 2x 6 pin molex connectors, no 8 pin included...It says in the booklet NOT to use adapters. Message says "You have not connected one of your video card power connectors to the power supply" when I have... both 6 pins are in the card.

Well I cannot say I know much more. I just remember reading all this back when the 4870X2 came out. People had only 6 pins so they got the adapter, and it seemed to work for them. Looks like you need a new power supply w/ a 8 pin native design.

A new PSU, I'm not accepting that. I've been Googling in the background and everywhere I read it says you need 2x6 pin molex connector which I have. I have 2 separate 6 pin molex cables from my PSU to the card, see pic below:

I have a 620hx and I have two 6+2 pin pci-e plugins and they work fine with my hd4870x2 (which draws a lot more juice then the hd4890). Call up corsair and ask them to ship you the 6+2 adapter.

Both my molex cables are 6+2, but in your pic, you have a standard 6 molex and then a 6+2 molex. Is that correct? If so, that's how we differ.

If I understand you correctly, you are using ONLY the 2 6 pin plugs to the card, and not the one pictured here, and you have stated that the card has both an 8 pin and a 6 pin...Use the 6 +2 pin (plug all 8 in) you have pictured + the 6 pin.

Also, post pictures of the box and card, since you stated it isn't the same as that other site...

BINGO! Got it working, thanks so much!.

I have 2 molex connectors from the PSU to the card, BOTH were 6+2. I had them both plugged into the card, but in the 8pin slot, only 6 of the pins were being used. Thanks to you and others here, I finally realised I needed to use that +2 to fill the gap. To summarise, I am now using a 6+2 pin molex in the 6 pin slot (the +2 is not being used) and in the 8 pin slot, I am using a 6+2 molex (the +2 is filling in the gap)... understand?

Yes, the box is different from what the retailer shows and the review sites, the connects are also different because mine has an 8 pin and a 6 pin beside each other but every picture I see of the 4890 XXX has 2 lots of 6 pin.... no 8 pin in sight. Do you still want pictures?

So you're plugging in a 6+2 into the 8 pin (all slots full) and then the other 6+2 into the 6 pin but without the +2 right?
 
I figured that was the issue...glad you got it sorted.

Throw some pictures up of the card and the box it came in if you don't mind!

Want to see what you got there...
