Help Installing Windows 7 (Partition?)

So I am trying to install windows 7 on my computer (which is now running vista x64), but I do not want to overwrite my current OS. Im trying to partition the main HD (WD 640gb with 318gb free) so I can install 7 on that, but when i try to shrink the volume, it says I can only shrink it 219mb


Why, when I have 318gb free, can I only shrink the volume 219mb?

Please help!

The system files do not allow you to shrink. You need to move them first.

id just buy a new hard drive to install the new os on, and leave the old one unplugged to make sure you arent messing with the files when you install the new os.

Hard drives are cheap.

When you are satisfied you know what you are doing in the new os, you can plug the old drive back in as a secondary data drive.
