Help installing SATA for the first time

I'm a bit confused about installing a single booting SATA drive in a soon-to-be new system. I remember back in my HPT374 RAID days installing the driver from the floppy at the beginning of the install, then the XP drivers after the install had completed. If I'm using a single SATA drive, do I still need to install drivers at the beginning and the end of the install? It's XP SP2 on an Asus A8N-E btw, the manual just isn't that clear.
 
when the xp disc load first starts, press f6 then it will ask for the disk. then load the drivers from there. You dont have to load again at the end. When you get into windows you will have to load teh board drivers though for sata, if not, ive seen it show up wrong in device manager.
 
Thanks. While I'm here, I've never installed an NForce4 based board before - what drivers from the chipset drivers are/aren't recommended? I know when I use Via boards I use the default XP IDE and GART drivers, and only the INF driver from the Hyperions. (I know with the Hyperion drivers, it actually says DO NOT use the GART driver if you're using SP2)

Which nForce4 board do you have. Most (if not all) will not require you install SATA drivers at the beginning of Windows XP install. Older nForce 2/3/etc. boards did.

Also the drivers many recommend you do NOT install are the Firewall and NAM. Some will tell you not to install the IDE/SATA drivers (called nVidia Storage Driver in the install), but in all honesty I have not had any problems with them since my first nForce 2 board.

An A8N-E, which I see in your sig you have too!
 
A8N-E does not require a driver disk to install Windows XP on a single SATA disk.

I have installed WinXP on a A8N-E on a WD-Raptor twice without any SATA drivers.

that means that xp already has tehm loaded. which is real nice. so you shouldnt really need to load them.

DId you still have to do f6? or did it just go thru automatically. Ive had a few of each with the drivers that xp has.

Wrong, as long as the SATA controller is part of the chipset you shouldn't have to install drivers before installing windows.

This is a common misconception from people that used last generation boards that had SATA ports added by way of an external sata/raid controller.
