Help installing new drive

I'm trying to install a new Maxtor 200GB hard drive to replace my old WD 120GB with XP on it that I thought had failed. Over the past few months sometimes I would get a "bootdisk failure" error when starting up. This was usually remedied by just restarting again and everything would be fine. Well, a few days ago the same thing happened only this time it seems to be for good, no amount of restarting will get it to boot. So I go out and buy the new Maxtor and hook it up and turn on the computer but nothing, no power. So I go and buy a new 400W power supply, hook it up and the computer fires right up. So I formatted the drive and try loading XP onto it. No go, after a few minutes it says something about detecting an error and it needs to shut down to prevent damage to the computer. So, does anyone have any ideas of what to do now? How can I get it to load XP? Or is it possible to fix the old drive and get it to boot? BTW, I used the CD that came with the drive to format. Is there another way to format that might work? I'm just getting really frustrated with this whole thing. Anyways, thanks in advance.

slow down man.

we need your system info mobo/ram/cpu. i don't have a fix for your system, but just some suggestions:
try swapping the ide cables -- they might be crap,
it says something about detecting an error and it needs to shut down to prevent damage to the computer.
uhhh, what exactly was the error? did it occur while actually loading xp (like while entering in your computer's name or somehting) or did it occur while formatting the drive to ntfs (while xp preps the drive)?? What is your case like? sometimes computers like to shut down if it's wicked hot in there. try again with the side of the case off. it's good that you have a new PSU. you can often check CPU/case temps in system bios. if the case is too high then try adding another fan; if the cpu is really high then check your heatsink (did you install it yourself? with AS, or a tim, or what?--correctly?).

hope this helps
